A Passage from the Tale

The Boy and the Donkey Çınar BİBER

Theo skipped up the gravel path of Sunny Meadow Farm Sanctuary, his yellow backpack bouncing. His eyes sparkled as he saw goats, chickens, and a big brown horse. But then he noticed a small grey donkey standing alone by the fence. The donkey's long ears twitched, and his dark eyes watched Theo quietly. Theo felt a warm pull in his heart. He wanted to meet this gentle creature. 1

Caretaker Maya walked over with a friendly smile. "That's Jasper," she said, pointing to the grey donkey. "He's shy and doesn't like loud noises or big crowds." Theo nodded, remembering how he sometimes felt nervous in noisy places. Maya showed him how to stand still and speak softly. "Let him come to you," she said. Theo waited, his green sneakers planted on the soft grass. 2

Jasper took a slow step forward, then another. His cream muzzle sniffed the air, and his fluffy tuft wiggled. Theo held out his hand, palm up, and whispered, "Hello, Jasper." The donkey's long ears swiveled toward the sound. He took one more step and gently touched Theo's fingers with his soft nose. Theo's hazel eyes widened with joy. A quiet friendship had begun. 3

The next day, Theo brought a carrot for Jasper. But when a group of visitors laughed loudly nearby, Jasper jerked his head up and backed away. His brown halter jingled, and his dark eyes looked worried. Theo frowned. "He doesn't like the noise," he said to Maya. "How can we help him feel safe?" Maya smiled. "We can plan a special day, just for Jasper." 4

Theo and Maya found Caretaker Sam in the barn, holding a clipboard. Sam's round glasses gleamed as he listened to their idea. "A peaceful visiting day!" Sam said, his blue eyes bright. "We'll have small groups and quiet activities." Theo clapped his hands. "Jasper can meet people slowly," he said. "And we can teach them to be calm and kind." They started making a plan. 5

Sam wrote down the schedule. "Groups of three, every fifteen minutes," he said. "No running, no shouting." Maya added, "We'll have a quiet corner with books and drawing." Theo thought hard. "We could make a sign that says 'Please whisper,'" he suggested. "And maybe a picture of Jasper so people know he's shy." Maya nodded. "That's a wonderful idea, Theo." 6

Theo worked all afternoon on the sign. He drew Jasper with his long ears and gentle eyes. In big letters, he wrote: "Please whisper. Jasper is shy." His curly hair fell over his forehead as he colored carefully. Maya helped him hang it on the barn door. "This will help visitors understand," she said. Theo felt proud. He couldn't wait for the peaceful day. 7

On the morning of the peaceful visiting day, Theo arrived early. He wore his red T-shirt and carried a basket of carrots. Sam checked his clipboard. "First group is here," he said. Theo took a deep breath. He walked to Jasper's paddock and spoke in a soft voice. "It's okay, Jasper. They'll be quiet." The donkey's ears flicked, but he stayed close. 8

The first group was a family with two children. They read Theo's sign and whispered to each other. Theo showed them how to stand still and let Jasper come near. The children held out their hands quietly. Jasper took a step forward, then another. His nose twitched as he sniffed their fingers. The children giggled softly. Jasper's dark eyes softened. He seemed to relax. 9

Next came a small group of older visitors. They moved slowly and spoke in hushed tones. Theo offered Jasper a carrot, and the donkey crunched it happily. Maya watched and smiled. "You're doing great, Theo," she whispered. "Jasper is learning that people can be calm and kind." Theo beamed. He felt like he was helping his friend feel safe. 10

By afternoon, Jasper stood calmly at the fence. His long ears were relaxed, and his cream muzzle twitched with curiosity. Theo sat on a stool nearby, drawing in his notebook. A little girl approached and asked, "Can I pet him?" Theo nodded. "Just be quiet and let him sniff your hand first." The girl did, and Jasper nuzzled her palm. Theo's heart swelled with happiness. 11

As the sun began to set, Maya brought Jasper his evening hay. "You did a wonderful thing today, Theo," she said. "You helped Jasper feel safe and happy." Theo looked at the grey donkey, who was now munching contentedly. "He's my friend," Theo said softly. "And friends help each other." Maya nodded. "That's right. Patience and kindness make friendship grow." 12

Sam came over with his clipboard and a big grin. "We had the quietest visiting day ever!" he said. "Everyone loved meeting Jasper." Theo smiled. He had learned that understanding another's feelings was important. Jasper had taught him that slow steps and soft voices could build trust. Theo gave Jasper one last gentle pat. "See you tomorrow, friend," he whispered. 13

On the walk home, Theo thought about Jasper. He remembered how the donkey had been nervous at first, and how he had slowly become calm. Theo realized that being patient and kind had made all the difference. His yellow backpack bounced as he skipped along the path. He couldn't wait to visit Jasper again and share more quiet moments together.
