A Passage from the Tale

The Boy and the Honey Possum Çınar BİBER

On a bright Saturday morning, a boy named Leo pulled on his red sneakers and grabbed his green canvas backpack. He loved exploring the wild corner of his garden, where flowers grew tall and bees hummed. His mum called it the 'secret garden.' Leo called it his adventure place. Today, he hoped to find something new. 1

Leo crept past the lavender bushes, his round brown eyes wide. Suddenly, a tiny movement caught his eye. On a bright pink flower sat a creature no bigger than his thumb! It had soft golden-brown fur, a long pointed snout, and a slender tail curled around the petal. Leo gasped. 'What are you?' he whispered. 2

The little animal didn't run away. It dipped its long snout into the flower and drank something sweet. Leo watched, amazed. 'Mum!' he called. 'Come quick!' His mum hurried over, her gardening gloves still in her pocket. She smiled when she saw the tiny creature. 'That's a honey possum,' she said softly. 'It drinks nectar all day long.' 3

Leo's little sister, Mia, ran over in her pink overalls, her black pigtails bouncing. 'What is it? What is it?' she asked. Leo pointed. 'A honey possum,' he said. 'It's so tiny!' Mia's big brown eyes went wide. 'Does it live here?' she asked. Mum nodded. 'Yes, but only if there are lots of flowers for it to eat.' 4

Mum explained that honey possums need many different flowers blooming all year round. 'They sip nectar from dawn to dusk,' she said. 'Without enough flowers, they can't survive.' Leo looked at the tiny creature. It seemed so small and hungry. 'But our garden is full of flowers,' he said. Mum sighed. 'Yes, but many gardens aren't. Their habitat is shrinking.' 5

Leo felt a little tug in his heart. The honey possum was so small and gentle. It needed help. 'What can we do?' he asked. Mum smiled. 'We can teach others about them,' she said. 'If more people plant flowers, the honey possums will have a home.' Leo thought hard. He wanted to do something big, something that everyone would remember. 6

That night, Leo had an idea. He would build a model of a perfect honey possum habitat! He would show everyone how these tiny animals need a rainbow of flowers. The next morning, he gathered cardboard, paint, and clay. Mia helped too, sorting the paints into a bright row. 'I want to paint the pink flowers!' she said. 7

Leo and Mia worked all day. They painted a big green garden on a cardboard base. They made flowers from clay and pipe cleaners: red, yellow, purple, and white. Leo even made a tiny honey possum from golden-brown clay, with a long snout and a curled tail. 'It looks just like the real one!' Mia said, clapping her hands. 8

Mum helped them glue the flowers in rows, just like a real garden. 'Honey possums need flowers that bloom at different times,' she said. 'So there's always nectar.' Leo added a little sign that said 'Protect the Honey Possum.' He drew a tiny heart next to it. 'This is going to teach everyone,' he said proudly. 9

When the model was dry, Leo set it on the kitchen table. He invited his friends and neighbours to see it. He told them about the honey possum, how tiny it was, and how it drank nectar all day. 'But if we don't plant enough flowers,' he said, 'they will lose their home.' Everyone leaned in closer to see the little clay creature. 10

Leo's friend Sam asked, 'What can we do to help?' Leo smiled. 'We can plant flowers in our gardens,' he said. 'Even a few pots on a balcony can help.' Mia jumped up and down. 'I'm going to plant pink flowers!' she said. Mum nodded. 'And we can tell other people too.' The room buzzed with excitement. 11

A week later, Leo's class visited the garden. His teacher, Ms. Chen, asked him to explain his model. Leo took a deep breath. 'This is a honey possum,' he said, pointing. 'It's a tiny animal that needs lots of flowers. But their habitat is shrinking. We can all help by planting flowers.' His classmates listened carefully. 12

Ms. Chen smiled. 'That's a wonderful lesson, Leo,' she said. 'Even the smallest creatures deserve our care.' The class decided to plant a flower garden at school. Leo felt proud. He had helped his tiny friend. The honey possum might be small, but it had taught everyone something big. 13

Back in his garden, Leo sat quietly by the pink flower. He hoped his honey possum friend would come back. Then he saw a tiny movement. There it was! The little creature dipped its snout into the flower and drank. Leo smiled. 'Hello again,' he whispered. 'I'll make sure you have lots of flowers.' The honey possum flicked its tail and drank some more. 14

Mia came running. 'Did you see it?' she asked. Leo nodded. 'It came back!' Mia giggled. 'Our flowers are the best!' Mum joined them, her warm smile bright. 'You did something wonderful, Leo,' she said. 'You protected a little creature.' Leo felt happy all over. He knew that even small actions can make a big difference. 15

From that day on, Leo always looked for tiny creatures in the garden. He learned that honey possums need many flowering plants to survive. He told everyone he met. 'Protect nature, one little animal at a time,' he said. And the honey possum, no bigger than a thumb, kept drinking sweet nectar, safe among the flowers.
