A Passage from the Tale

The Boy and the Sea Lion Çınar BİBER

Ben lived in a little town by the sea. He loved the beach more than anywhere else. Every morning, he pulled on his yellow rain boots and ran to the shore. He collected shells and watched the waves. His red hoodie flapped in the wind. Ben was eight years old, small for his age, with curly black hair and a gap-toothed smile. He always wanted to help every creature he met. 1

One sunny morning, Ben saw something strange near the rocks. It was a sea lion, lying still on the sand. Her dark brown fur was wet and tangled. Her big dark eyes looked tired and scared. Ben's heart thumped. He wanted to run over and hug her. But he knew he should be careful. He remembered his dad saying, "Wild animals need space." 2

Ben ran to find help. He found Dr. Maya, a marine veterinarian, at the rescue center. She wore a teal shirt and had a radio on her belt. "There's a sea lion on the beach!" Ben said. Dr. Maya grabbed her kit. "Show me," she said calmly. They hurried back to the shore. Ben's boots squelched in the wet sand. 3

Dr. Maya knelt beside the sea lion. "She's weak and has a cut on her flipper," she said. "We need to move her safely." Ben stepped closer. "Can I help?" he asked. Dr. Maya smiled. "Yes, but you must listen carefully. Wildlife care requires experts. We'll use a special net and a stretcher." Ben nodded. He was ready to learn. 4

Together, they gently guided the sea lion onto the stretcher. Ben held one side, and Dr. Maya held the other. The sea lion let out a soft bark. "It's okay, girl," Ben whispered. They carried her to the rescue truck. Ben's arms felt tired, but he didn't let go. Dr. Maya said, "You're a good helper, Ben." 5

At the rescue center, Dr. Maya showed Ben the medical room. "First, we check her weight and give her fluids," she said. Ben watched as she cleaned the cut on the flipper. The sea lion flinched. "Why does she need a tag?" Ben asked. "It's a blue ID tag to track her recovery," Dr. Maya explained. Ben touched the tag gently. It was smooth and cool. 6

The next day, Ben visited the sea lion. She was swimming in a pool and seemed a little stronger. Dr. Maya gave her fish. "She's eating!" Ben cheered. "Yes, but she needs time," Dr. Maya said. "Wild animals heal slowly. We must be patient." Ben watched the sea lion dive and splash. He wished he could do more to help. 7

Ben had an idea. "I can make posters!" he said. "To teach people about sea lions." Dr. Maya's eyes lit up. "That's a wonderful idea, Ben. Posters can help visitors understand how to act on the beach." Ben ran home and gathered paper, markers, and crayons. He drew a sea lion with big whiskers and a blue tag. He wrote: "Keep your distance!" 8

The next poster showed a person calling a rescue hotline. Ben drew a phone and wrote: "Call experts if an animal is hurt." He used bright colors and big letters. He made ten posters. His canvas tote bag was full. He couldn't wait to put them up. His mom helped him tape them to a stick. 9

Ben and Dr. Maya hung the posters along the beach path. Visitors stopped to read them. A little girl asked, "Why can't I pet the sea lion?" Ben answered, "Because they need space to rest. And if they're hurt, experts can help." The girl nodded. Ben felt proud. He was teaching people, just like Dr. Maya taught him. 10

Weeks passed, and the sea lion grew stronger. Dr. Maya said, "She's ready to go back to the sea." Ben felt happy and a little sad. He had watched her every day. On the day of the release, Ben stood on the beach with Dr. Maya. The sea lion barked and wiggled her whiskers. "Goodbye, friend," Ben whispered. 11

They opened the gate, and the sea lion slid into the water. She swam out, then leaped into the air. Ben cheered. "She's free!" Dr. Maya put a hand on his shoulder. "You helped make this happen, Ben. Your posters taught people to respect her home." Ben smiled his gap-toothed smile. He knew he had helped in the right way. 12

Ben kept making posters. He drew sea lions, dolphins, and turtles. Each poster had a simple message: "Keep your distance, call for help." Dr. Maya hung them at the rescue center. Visitors read them and learned. Ben felt proud because he helped animals without getting too close. He learned that care and expertise go together. 13

One day, a family found a hurt bird on the beach. They remembered Ben's poster and called Dr. Maya. She came and rescued the bird. Ben watched from a distance. He knew he had made a difference. His red hoodie flapped in the wind. He was still small, but his ideas were big. 14

Ben and Dr. Maya became good friends. She taught him more about marine animals. He taught her new poster ideas. They made a great team. Ben's canvas tote bag was always full of posters. He knew that even a small boy could help, as long as he listened to experts and cared with all his heart.
