A Passage from the Tale

The Boy and the Seal Çınar BİBER

On a bright Saturday morning, a boy named Leo pulled on his yellow rain jacket and red rubber boots. He packed his green canvas backpack with a notebook and pencils. Today was special. He was visiting the marine rescue center with his class. Leo loved animals more than anything, and he could not wait to see what waited inside. 1

The rescue center smelled like salt and fish. Tall tanks bubbled, and pools sparkled under the sun. A tall woman in teal waterproof overalls walked over. "Welcome! I'm Marina, a marine expert here," she said with a kind smile. Her orange gloves were wet from feeding time. Leo's dark-brown eyes grew wide with wonder. 2

Marina led the group past a big pool. Inside, a young seal pup swam in slow circles. Its silver-grey fur was spotted with darker dots, and its big black eyes looked shy. A small blue tag shone on one flipper. "This pup was found alone on the beach," Marina said softly. "We're helping it get strong again." 3

Leo stepped closer to the pool. The seal pup peeked up, its long white whiskers twitching. "Why does it have a tag?" Leo asked. Marina knelt beside him. "The tag helps us keep track of its health," she explained. "Every seal here gets expert care so it can grow strong and safe." Leo nodded, watching the pup's soft nose sniff the air. 4

Marina showed Leo the feeding room. She mixed a special fish formula in a big bowl. "We feed the pup small meals many times a day," she said. "That helps it grow strong." Leo watched as she poured the formula into a bottle. The seal pup slurped noisily, its glossy eyes bright. Leo giggled. "It sounds like a little vacuum cleaner!" 5

Next, Marina checked the pup's flippers and fur. She weighed it on a special scale. "Good job, little one," she whispered. The seal pup wiggled and flapped. Leo helped write the numbers in a chart. "You're a great helper," Marina said. Leo felt proud. He wanted to learn everything about seal care. 6

Marina explained that the pup needed a safe pool with clean water. "We keep the water cold and fresh," she said. "And we make sure no loud noises scare the seals." Leo helped test the water with a special tool. He watched the pup dive and splash. "It looks happy!" Leo said. Marina smiled. "Happy seals heal faster." 7

That afternoon, Marina had an idea. "We're making a new exhibit about seal care," she said. "Would you like to help?" Leo's round face lit up. "Yes!" he cried. Marina gave him a big piece of cardboard and some paint. "You can paint a sign for our exhibit," she said. "Something that tells visitors how we help seals." 8

Leo dipped his brush in bright blue paint. He painted a big seal with a blue tag, just like the pup. Then he added words in neat letters: "Seals Need Expert Care!" He painted little fish and waves around the edges. Marina nodded. "That's perfect," she said. "Visitors will love it." Leo's freckled nose crinkled with a smile. 9

Next, Leo sorted photos for the exhibit. There were pictures of seals being fed, weighed, and swimming in clean pools. He glued them onto a board in a tidy row. "Put the feeding photo first," Marina suggested. "Then people see how we help right away." Leo arranged each photo carefully. He wanted everyone to understand how seal rescue worked. 10

While Leo worked, the seal pup swam close to the glass. It seemed to watch him. Leo pressed his hand gently against the glass. The pup touched its nose to the same spot. "Look, Marina! It's saying hello!" Leo laughed. Marina smiled. "It's getting playful," she said. "That's a good sign. Playful seals are feeling better." 11

Marina checked the pup one more time. "This little seal is growing stronger every day," she said. "Soon it can go back to the ocean." Leo felt a warm glow. "Because of your expert care," he said. Marina nodded. "And because helpers like you spread the word," she added. "Kids can make a big difference for wildlife." 12

At last, the exhibit was ready. Leo's painted sign hung above the photos. Visitors stopped to read and look. Leo stood tall in his yellow rain jacket. "I helped make this," he told a little girl. "Seals need care, just like us." The girl smiled and pointed at the seal pup swimming behind them. 13

The seal pup splashed happily in its pool. Its silver-grey fur gleamed, and its black eyes sparkled. Leo knew it would soon be strong enough to swim free. He felt proud of the small part he played. "Thank you for teaching me," he said to Marina. She gave him a high five with her orange glove. 14

On the way home, Leo thought about the seal pup. He remembered its soft nose and playful splash. He remembered Marina's kind smile and expert hands. Wildlife recovery needs expert care, he thought. And kids can help too. He hugged his green backpack and smiled all the way home. 15

That night, Leo drew a picture of the seal pup. He wrote at the bottom: "Expert care helps wildlife grow strong." He hung it on his wall. He couldn't wait to visit again. Maybe one day, he would be a marine expert too. For now, he was happy to be a helper. And that was enough.
