A Passage from the Tale

The Fox's Secret Door Çınar BİBER

In the heart of the big forest, where ferns grew tall and mushrooms wore tiny caps, lived a fox named Finn. His rustorange fur glowed in the dappled sunlight, and his cream chest and tail tip looked like patches of cloud. Finn carried a small brown leather satchel with a brass buckle across his body. His amber eyes sparkled with endless questions about the world around him. 1

Every morning, Finn trotted along the winding paths, sniffing mossy logs and peeking under fallen leaves. He loved to wonder what lay beyond the next bend. His bent left ear twitched at every sound, and his bushy tail swished with excitement. "What's hidden today?" he asked the whispering trees, but the trees only rustled their leaves and smiled in the breeze. 2

One bright afternoon, Finn spotted something odd in the trunk of a very old oak tree. A tiny wooden door, no bigger than his satchel, was tucked between two thick roots. It had a little brass handle shaped like a leaf. Finn's heart did a happy flip. "A secret door!" he whispered. "I wonder where it goes." 3

Finn pushed the small door with his nose. It creaked open, and a cool, earthy smell drifted out. Behind the door, a narrow path wound into the darkness under the roots. Finn's amber eyes grew wide. He could see tiny specks of light dancing far ahead. "I have to know what's down there," he said, and he stepped bravely inside. 4

The path sloped gently downward, lit by glowing mushrooms on the walls. Finn's black paws padded softly on the packed earth. Soon the tunnel opened into a wide, dusty room with a high ceiling made of tree roots. Cobwebs hung like silver curtains, and a big round window let in a beam of sunlight. Finn gasped. "This is a secret place!" 5

In the middle of the room stood a long wooden telescope, pointing up through a hole in the ceiling. It was covered in dust and had a brass eyepiece. Finn had never seen anything like it. He climbed onto a stool and peered through, but it was too dark to see anything. "I need help," he said. "I'll fetch my friends!" 6

Finn raced back through the tunnel and out the little door. He found his friend Bramble the hedgehog first, knitting a red scarf under a bush. "Bramble! You won't believe what I found!" Finn panted. Bramble's tiny black nose twitched. "A secret door? Oh dear, is it safe?" But his round black eyes were already curious. "Well, I suppose we can take a look." 7

Next, they found Tansy the rabbit, hopping in the meadow. Her long ears stood up when she heard the news. "A secret path? Let me see!" she cried, her blue vest bouncing as she raced ahead. Finn led the way, and Tansy's white tail bobbed as she followed the tunnel. "This is amazing!" she squealed, her pink nose wiggling with excitement. 8

Finally, they visited Pip the owl, who was perched high in a beech tree. Pip's golden eyes blinked wisely. "A door in a tree, you say? And a room with a telescope? I think I know this place." Pip spread broad wings and glided down. "Lead the way, Finn. My brass lens and I are ready for an adventure." 9

Back in the dusty room, the four friends looked around. Bramble sneezed at the cobwebs, and Tansy hopped onto a dusty shelf. Pip's speckled chest puffed with knowledge. "This is an old observatory," Pip said. "Long ago, animals came here to study the stars. The telescope still points at the sky!" Finn's eyes shone. "Let's clean it up and use it tonight!" 10

Bramble unwound his red scarf and dusted the telescope's brass tube. Tansy found a soft cloth in her vest pocket and polished the eyepiece until it gleamed. Finn carefully turned the big wooden knob, and the telescope swung smoothly toward the round window. Pip nodded. "Perfect. Now we must wait for the stars to come out." 11

That night, the friends gathered in the observatory. The round window showed a sky full of twinkling stars. Pip explained the constellations: the Great Bear, the Swan, and the tiny Fox. Finn took the first turn at the telescope. "I can see a whole new world up there!" he whispered. One by one, they all looked, and the dusty room filled with happy wonder. 12

As the night grew late, Bramble yawned and Tansy curled up on a soft cushion. Pip's golden eyes were still bright. "Curiosity brought us here," Pip said softly. "And now we have a secret place to share." Finn smiled, his bent ear twitching. "We'll keep the door a secret and visit often. The stars are waiting for us." 13

The next morning, they promised to meet again at dusk. Finn led his friends out through the little door and back into the sunlit forest. "Same time tomorrow?" Tansy asked, hopping with joy. "Same time," Finn agreed. Bramble wrapped his scarf tighter and smiled. "I'm glad I came along," he said. "Even if it was a bit dusty." 14

Word spread among the forest animals about the wonderful secret observatory. Finn became known as the fox who found the door, but he always said, "I just followed my curiosity." The friends took turns cleaning and exploring, and the old observatory became a gathering place for any animal who wondered about the stars.
