Maya is eight years old and has one big wish: a pet of her very own. On a sunny Saturday her dad takes her to the animal shelter, where a small ferret with a dark mask around his bright black eyes peeks out of a soft blanket. Maya names him Pip, fits him with a red collar and a little silver bell, and brings him home. Pip is fast, curious and full of energy, sniffing the sofa, the rug and Maya's red sneakers before wiggling underneath the furniture and popping out the other side.
When Pip starts digging at his blanket and racing around the room, Maya and her dad realize he needs more to do. Ferrets are playful animals, Dad explains, and they need fun activities every day to stay healthy and happy. Together they build cardboard tunnels with loops and turns in the garage, hide treats in cups and puzzle boxes, and set up a digging box filled with soft fabric strips. Maya draws the plans herself with her crayons, and Dad handles the grown-up knife and supervises to keep everything safe.
One day Pip seems sad and does not want to play, so Maya invents new puzzles, and his bright eyes return. She learns that play is a big part of caring for an animal, and she makes a play chart so that every morning brings a new activity. When her friends visit, she explains that ferrets need puzzles to stay busy. The story is a gentle, practical tale for young readers about responsibility, observation and the everyday work of keeping a pet happy.

A Passage from the Tale
The Girl and the Ferret Çınar BİBER
Maya was eight years old and had a big wish. She wanted a pet of her very own. One sunny Saturday, her dad took her to the animal shelter. A small ferret with a dark mask around its bright black eyes peeked out of a soft blanket. The ferret had a pink nose and long whiskers. Maya smiled her gap-toothed smile. "Hello, little one," she whispered. 1
The ferret wiggled and sniffed Maya's fingers. Its little pink nose twitched. Maya giggled. "He likes me!" she said. Dad smiled his friendly smile. "He needs a name," he said. Maya thought hard. "Pip!" she said. "His name is Pip." Pip had cream and brown fur and a fluffy tail. Maya put a red collar with a small silver bell around his neck. 2
At home, Maya showed Pip his new bed. Pip sniffed everything. He sniffed the sofa, the rug, and Maya's red sneakers. Then he wiggled under the sofa and popped out the other side. "He's so fast!" Maya laughed. Her curly black hair bounced in two puffy buns. Pip zoomed around the room, his bell jingling. Maya clapped her hands. "You love to play!" she said. 3
The next morning, Pip was full of energy. He dug at his blanket and wiggled through the sofa cushions. Maya watched him. "He needs more to do," she said. Dad nodded. "Ferrets are playful animals," he said. "They need fun activities every day to stay healthy and happy." Maya looked at Pip. Pip looked back with bright black eyes. "Then we'll make him a play world!" Maya said. 4
Maya and Dad went to the garage. They found long cardboard tubes and a big box. "We can build safe tunnels," Dad said. Maya drew a plan with her crayons. She made loops and turns. Dad cut the tubes with a grown-up knife. Maya taped them together. Pip sniffed the tunnels. His whiskers wiggled. "Let's test them!" Maya said. They put a treat at one end. 5
Pip wiggled into the tunnel. His long body zoomed through the loops. His little paws patted the cardboard. He popped out at the end and gobbled the treat. "He did it!" Maya cheered. Dad helped her make more tunnels. They connected them to the box. Pip raced through like a fuzzy rocket. His bell jingled. Maya felt proud. "He loves his tunnels!" she said. 6
Next, Maya wanted to make puzzles. Dad showed her how to hide treats in small cups. They cut holes in a box and put treats inside. Pip sniffed the puzzle box. He dug with his tiny paws. He wiggled his nose into a hole. A treat rolled out! Pip gobbled it up. "You're a smart ferret!" Maya said. Pip's whiskers twitched happily. 7
Every day after school, Maya set up new fun activities. She hid treats under cups. She made a digging box with soft fabric strips. Pip dug and sniffed. He wiggled with joy. Dad helped Maya change the tunnels each week. "Ferrets need new things to explore," he said. Maya nodded. She loved watching Pip play. His happy wiggles made her happy too. 8
One day, Pip seemed sad. He lay in his bed and didn't want to play. Maya worried. "What's wrong, Pip?" she asked. She called Dad. Dad checked Pip's ears and eyes. "He seems healthy," Dad said. "Maybe he's bored with the same puzzles." Maya thought. "Then we need new puzzles!" she said. She ran to get her crayons and paper. 9
Maya drew new puzzle ideas. She made a treat ball with a small hole. She put treats inside a closed box with tiny openings. Pip sniffed the new toys. His eyes brightened. He rolled the ball with his nose. A treat popped out! Pip wiggled and zoomed. He dug at the box and found more treats. "You're back!" Maya laughed. Dad smiled. "Play keeps him curious," he said. 10
Maya learned that play is a big part of caring for animals. It keeps Pip healthy and happy. She made a play chart with pictures of tunnels and puzzles. Every morning, she set up a new activity before school. Dad supervised to keep everything safe. Pip sniffed, dug, and wiggled with joy. Maya felt proud of her happy ferret. 11
Maya's friends came to visit. They watched Pip zoom through tunnels. "He's so fast!" said her friend Sam. Maya showed them the puzzle box. "Ferrets need puzzles to stay busy," she said. Her friends helped hide treats. Pip found every one. His little bell jingled. Maya's warm brown eyes sparkled. "Play is important for animals," she told them. "It keeps them healthy and happy." 12
Now every day is an adventure. Maya wakes up early to set up Pip's tunnels. She hides treats in new places. Pip sniffs and digs. He wiggles through the loops and pops out with a happy chirp. Dad helps with the grown-up parts. Maya feels proud. She knows that caring for a pet means giving it love, safety, and lots of play. 13
Pip zooms through the tunnels with a happy wiggle. His bell jingles. Maya laughs her gap-toothed laugh. She loves watching her ferret play. Dad says, "You're a great ferret keeper, Maya." Maya smiles. She knows that play is a big part of caring. Every day is full of tunnels, puzzles, and happy ferret games.
