🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:35

Maya loves the ocean more than anything, and every morning she pulls on her yellow rash guard, pushes her red snorkel mask onto her forehead and runs to the beach with her waterproof notebook. One day a huge dark shape glides beneath the surface: a manta ray with a diamond-shaped body wider than a rowboat. Maya slips quietly into the water, and instead of swimming away, the ray circles her and stays. Noticing a thin woven seaweed band around one fin tip, Maya names her Pearl and begins to visit her every day.

As the friendship grows, Pearl shows Maya a secret coral garden full of bright fish and rolls over to display her white belly. Maya fills her notebook with observations: manta rays are curious, gentle and as smart as dolphins. Then a tourist boat roars toward Pearl and the frightened ray darts away. Maya realizes that people who love seeing manta rays do not always know how to be careful, so she decides to write a guide with simple rules about distance, quiet and patience, and to share it with the local dive shop and the beach.

The story follows a young ocean lover who turns what she learns from a wild animal into something that helps both the animal and the visitors. It shows how observation, note-taking and clear, kind communication can change behavior, and it introduces basic ideas about respecting marine life. The book is suited to young readers who enjoy animal friendship stories and to adults looking for a gentle opening to talk about ocean care.

A Passage from the Tale

The Girl and the Manta Ray Çınar BİBER

Maya loved the ocean more than anything. Every morning, she pulled on her yellow rash guard with the little fish print and her teal swim shorts. She pushed her red snorkel mask up on her forehead and grabbed her waterproof notebook. Today, she would study manta rays again. Her curly black hair bounced in two puffy buns as she ran to the beach. 1

From the shore, Maya watched the water. Suddenly, a huge dark shape glided beneath the surface. It was a manta ray! Its diamond-shaped body was wider than a rowboat. Maya took a deep breath and slipped into the water. She swam quietly, her notebook safe in her hand. The manta ray's wing-like fins moved slowly, like a gentle underwater bird. 2

The manta ray turned and looked at Maya with small, gentle dark eyes. Maya froze, then smiled. The ray didn't swim away. Instead, it circled her once, twice, then stopped. Maya noticed a thin woven seaweed band around one fin tip. 'You're friendly,' Maya whispered. The ray's white belly sparkled with grey speckles, and its pale white shoulder patches shone on its dark back. 3

Maya named the manta ray Pearl. Every day, she swam out to meet her. Pearl seemed to recognize Maya's red snorkel mask and curly hair. One morning, Pearl glided right up to Maya and nudged her gently with a fin. Maya laughed, bubbles rising. She wrote in her notebook: 'Manta rays are curious and gentle. They like to play.' 4

Pearl showed Maya amazing things. She led her to a secret coral garden full of bright fish. She rolled over to show her clean white belly, inviting Maya to look. Maya learned that manta rays are smart. Pearl remembered Maya's favorite spot and always waited there. Maya wrote: 'Pearl is as smart as a dolphin!' 5

One day, Maya saw a boat full of tourists speeding toward Pearl. The engine roared. Pearl darted away, frightened. Maya's heart sank. She knew people loved seeing manta rays, but they didn't always know how to be careful. She thought, 'I must help them understand. These gentle giants need our protection.' 6

Maya swam after Pearl and found her hiding near a rocky reef. Pearl's eyes were wide. Maya floated beside her and gently touched her fin. 'It's okay,' she said softly. 'I'll find a way to keep you safe.' Pearl relaxed and swam close. Maya knew she had to teach people how to enjoy the ocean without scaring the manta rays. 7

Back home, Maya opened her notebook. She wrote: 'How to Be a Friend to Manta Rays.' She drew pictures of boats going slowly. She wrote: 'Keep your distance. Never chase or touch.' She added: 'No loud noises.' Her curly buns bobbed as she worked. She wanted every visitor to know how to protect these gentle giants. 8

Maya's guide had clear rules. She drew a big heart next to a manta ray. 'Stay at least three meters away,' she wrote. 'Let them come to you.' She explained that manta rays are harmless and smart. 'They don't want to hurt you,' she wrote. 'They just want to swim and eat tiny plankton. Be calm and quiet.' 9

Maya took her guide to the local dive shop. The owner read it and smiled. 'This is wonderful!' he said. He printed copies for every boat. Maya also made a poster for the beach. Soon, tourists were reading her guide. They learned to watch manta rays from a distance and never chase them. Pearl swam freely again. 10

One afternoon, a tourist boat came near Pearl. The engine slowed. The people on board pointed and whispered. They didn't jump in or shout. Pearl glided calmly, her wing-like fins moving gracefully. She seemed happy. Maya watched from the shore, her heart full. Her guide was working! People were being kind to the ocean. 11

Pearl swam over to Maya and circled her slowly. Maya laughed with joy. She knew Pearl was saying thank you. Maya wrote in her notebook: 'When we protect manta rays, we protect the whole ocean.' She drew a picture of Pearl with her seaweed band and a big smile. 'Friendship and care can protect the gentle giants.' 12

Maya's guide spread to other beaches. Schools invited her to talk. She showed her notebook and told Pearl's story. 'Manta rays are gentle and smart,' she said. 'They need clean water and space to swim.' Children listened with wide eyes. They wanted to help too. Maya felt proud. Her small idea was making a big difference. 13

Now Maya visits Pearl every day. They swim together through the blue water. Pearl shows Maya new coral and tiny fish. Maya writes down everything she learns. She knows Pearl trusts her. And Pearl knows Maya will always protect her. Their friendship is a special bond between a girl and a gentle ocean giant. 14

Maya's guide is now famous. It hangs in dive shops and on boats. Tourists read it and follow the rules. They watch manta rays with respect. Maya and Pearl showed everyone that friendship and care can protect the gentle giants of the sea. The ocean is safer for Pearl and all her friends. 15

Maya sits on the beach, writing in her notebook. She looks at Pearl, gliding gracefully in the waves. 'We did it,' Maya whispers. She knows that every small act of kindness helps. And she will always be a friend to the manta rays. The sun sets, painting the sky pink, and Maya smiles. The ocean is full of gentle giants, and they are protected.
