The Girl and the Rabbit

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:00

One bright morning, a girl named Mia is exploring the tall grass near her house when she hears a frightened squeak from a bush. Behind it she finds a small cream-white rabbit with dusty fur and drooping ears. Speaking softly so as not to scare it, she carries the rabbit home, settles it on a soft towel in a quiet corner, and names it Clover. Watching the rabbit hop around her small room, Mia realizes that Clover needs far more space to run and explore than four walls can give.

With her tool pouch jingling at her belt, Mia draws a plan and, together with her father, builds a spacious outdoor enclosure in the garden. She measures and saws wood, hammers nails, and adds a cardboard tunnel, a gently sloped ramp, a water pool, a hay box, and a little wooden house with a round door. When Clover is placed inside, it races through the tunnel and up the ramp, and Mia sees how much a proper home matters. Each morning she fills the water bowl, brings fresh hay and vegetables, cleans the enclosure, and makes new toys, and when Clover grows too big for the old tunnel, she simply rebuilds it longer and higher, adding a hay-bale maze and a sand digging box.

The story follows Mia and Clover through these everyday acts of care, showing young readers that pets need room to move, things to keep them busy, and steady attention as they grow. It is a gentle tale for children about kindness toward animals and the responsibility that comes with looking after a creature that depends on you.

A Passage from the Tale

The Girl and the Rabbit Çınar BİBER

On a bright morning, a girl named Mia skipped through the tall grass near her house. Her curly dark-brown hair bounced in two puffs, and her mustard-yellow overalls swished as she went. She loved to explore and look for little treasures. Suddenly, she heard a tiny, frightened squeak coming from a bush. Mia stopped and listened carefully. 1

Behind the bush, a small rabbit trembled. Its cream-white fur was dusty, and its grey patches were smudged with dirt. Long ears drooped, and its glossy dark-brown eyes looked scared. Mia knelt down slowly. "It's okay, little one," she whispered. "I won't hurt you." The rabbit's tiny pink nose twitched, but it didn't run away. 2

Mia gently scooped up the rabbit. It felt warm and soft, about the size of two hands. She carried it home in her arms. "You need a safe place," she said. At home, she found a soft towel and made a little bed in a quiet corner. The rabbit sniffed the towel and finally relaxed. Mia smiled. "I'll call you Clover," she said. 3

Clover the rabbit was curious. It hopped around Mia's room, exploring every corner. But Mia noticed something. Clover loved to hop and run, but the room was small. "You need more space to play," Mia said. She remembered her tool pouch. "I can build you a big, fun area!" She ran to get some wood and wire. 4

Mia drew a plan on a piece of paper. She would make a spacious enrichment area in the garden. It would have tunnels to explore, a ramp to hop up, and a cozy hideaway. "I'll need help," she said. Her dad came outside. "That's a wonderful idea," he said. "Let's build it together." They gathered wood, wire, and a small hammer. 5

Mia measured and sawed the wood carefully. She hammered nails, her tool pouch jingling on her belt. Clover watched from a safe spot, ears twitching. "This will be your new home," Mia told the rabbit. "You'll have room to hop and play every day." She made a little tunnel from a cardboard tube. Clover hopped over to sniff it. 6

The sun was warm as Mia worked. She built a ramp with a gentle slope. She added a small pool for water and a box filled with hay. "Rabbits need places to hide," she said. She made a little wooden house with a round door. Clover hopped inside and poked its head out. Mia laughed. "You like it already!" 7

Finally, the enclosure was ready. It was big and open, with soft grass and sunny spots. Mia placed Clover inside. The rabbit's nose twitched. It hopped a little, then a little more. Soon, Clover was racing through the tunnel and up the ramp. Mia clapped her hands. "You're so fast!" she cheered. 8

Clover explored every part of the new area. It hopped onto a low platform and looked around with bright eyes. Mia sat on the grass and watched. "This is your home now," she said. "You can play here every day." Clover hopped over and nuzzled Mia's hand. Mia felt a warm, happy feeling inside. 9

Every morning, Mia visited Clover. She filled the water bowl and gave fresh hay and vegetables. "Good morning, Clover!" she said. The rabbit's blue ribbon collar jingled as it hopped to greet her. Mia cleaned the enclosure and added new toys. "You need things to keep you busy," she said. She made a ball from twigs and paper. 10

One day, Clover seemed restless. It hopped back and forth, ears twitching. Mia watched closely. "What's wrong, Clover?" she asked. Then she noticed. The tunnel was too small now. Clover had grown! Mia smiled. "You need more space to play," she said. "I'll make it bigger and better." 11

Mia fetched her tool pouch again. She added a longer tunnel and a higher ramp. She built a little maze with hay bales. Clover hopped through the new tunnel, its bell jingling. "This is fun!" Mia laughed. She added a digging box filled with soft sand. Clover dug happily, sending sand flying. Mia giggled at the happy rabbit. 12

Clover loved the new additions. It raced through the maze and dug in the sand. Mia sat nearby, reading a book. Sometimes Clover hopped onto her lap and nuzzled her chin. "You're my best friend," Mia whispered. The rabbit's ears perked up, and its tiny nose twitched. Mia felt proud of the happy home she had made. 13

Mia learned that pets need room to move and play. She told her friends about Clover. "Rabbits need space to hop and explore," she said. Her friends came to see the enclosure. They watched Clover race through the tunnel and dig in the sand. "You take such good care of Clover," they said. Mia beamed with pride. 14

Playing together made both Mia and Clover smile. Every day, they shared happy moments. Mia would hide a treat in the maze, and Clover would sniff it out. The rabbit's blue ribbon collar jingled as it hopped. Mia's freckled face lit up with joy. "I'm so glad I found you," she said. 15

At sunset, Mia sat beside Clover's enclosure. Clover hopped onto her lap and snuggled close. "You're safe and happy now," Mia whispered. The rabbit's long ears twitched, and it closed its eyes. Mia smiled. She knew that caring for a rescued animal brings lots of joy. And playing together made every day brighter.
