🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:13

In the big blue ocean, where sunbeams dance on the waves, lives a little lanternfish with a round, plump body as blue as the deep sea and a silver belly that sparkles. Above his head, on a short stalk, glows a tiny lantern that shines with a soft, warm yellow light like a friendly star. His glow makes the dark water feel cozy, and he loves to swim and explore.

One day near a coral arch, the lanternfish hears a tiny, worried voice and finds Shrimp, a pale coral-pink shrimp whose long antennae twitch nervously and whose big dark eyes are full of worry. Shrimp is afraid of the dark deep water and cannot see anything in it. The lanternfish offers to light the way, and though Shrimp hesitates, he agrees to try, following close behind as the warm yellow light pushes the shadows back.

Their journey takes them to the edge of a deep-sea canyon that yawns wide and dark. Shrimp gasps and clings to a rock, but the lanternfish stays beside him, promising that they will not get lost and that they can go slowly, step by step. As they descend, strange shapes loom in the shadows and Shrimp's fear returns, yet each time his friend's steady glow and gentle encouragement help him find a little more courage. The story shows young readers how fear can be faced when someone stays beside you, and how courage grows when a friend supports you.

A Passage from the Tale

The Little Lanternfish Çınar BİBER

In the big blue ocean, where sunbeams dance on the waves, lived a little lanternfish. He had a round, plump body as blue as the deep sea, with a silver belly that sparkled. Above his head, on a short stalk, glowed a tiny lantern. It shone with a soft, warm yellow light, like a friendly star. The lanternfish loved to swim and explore, and his glow made the dark water feel cozy. 1

One day, as the lanternfish swam near a coral arch, he heard a tiny, worried voice. "Oh dear, oh dear," it said. He peeked around the coral and saw a little shrimp. The shrimp was pale coral-pink, with a segmented shell and many small legs. His long antennae twitched nervously, and his big dark eyes were full of worry. He was curled up in a shy, hunched pose. 2

"Hello," said the lanternfish gently. "I'm Lanternfish. What's your name?" The shrimp looked up, surprised by the kind glow. "I'm Shrimp," he whispered. "I'm scared of the dark deep water. It's so big and black, and I can't see anything." Lanternfish smiled. "Don't worry," he said. "My glow can light the way. Would you like to come with me?" 3

Shrimp hesitated, his antennae drooping. "But what if it's too dark?" he asked. Lanternfish swam closer, his warm light washing over the pink shrimp. "You won't be alone," he said. "I'll be right beside you. My glow will show us the way." Shrimp felt a tiny spark of hope. He uncurled a little. "Okay," he said softly. "I'll try." 4

Together, they swam away from the coral arch. Lanternfish led the way, his lantern bulb shining bright. Shrimp followed close, his little legs paddling quickly. The water around them grew darker, but the warm yellow light pushed the shadows back. "See?" said Lanternfish. "It's not so scary when we're together." Shrimp nodded, feeling a bit braver. 5

They came to the edge of a deep-sea canyon. It yawned wide and dark, like a giant mouth. Shrimp gasped and clung to a rock. "It's so deep!" he cried. "What if we get lost?" Lanternfish hovered beside him. "We won't get lost," he said. "My glow will guide us. And I'll stay right here with you. We can go slowly, step by step." 6

Shrimp took a deep breath. He looked at Lanternfish's steady glow, and then at the dark canyon. "Okay," he said. "I'll go if you're with me." Lanternfish smiled. "I'm right here," he said. "Let's go down together." They started to swim downward, Lanternfish first, Shrimp close behind. The canyon walls rose around them, but the little lantern lit their way. 7

As they went deeper, strange shapes loomed in the shadows. Shrimp's antennae quivered. "What was that?" he whispered. Lanternfish shone his light toward a rock. "Just a sleepy fish," he said. "See? Nothing to fear." Shrimp relaxed a little. He noticed that with Lanternfish's light, the canyon wasn't so scary. It was like a secret path, just for them. 8

They swam past tall sea plants that swayed like trees. Shrimp pointed with a tiny leg. "Look at that!" he said. A school of tiny silver fish darted by, their scales flashing in the lantern's glow. "They're beautiful," said Lanternfish. Shrimp forgot to be afraid for a moment. He was too busy looking at everything. "This is fun!" he said, surprised. 9

But then the canyon grew darker again, and Shrimp's fear crept back. He slowed down, his legs trembling. "Maybe we should go back," he said. Lanternfish turned and swam close. "You've been so brave," he said. "We're almost through. Just a little further. I'll keep my light bright for you." Shrimp looked at his friend's warm glow and felt courage grow inside him. 10

Shrimp took another step forward. "Okay," he said. "I can do it." Lanternfish beamed. "Of course you can," he said. "You're braver than you think." They swam on together, side by side. The canyon walls began to widen, and a soft light appeared ahead. "What's that?" Shrimp wondered. "Let's find out," said Lanternfish, his eyes sparkling. 11

They swam toward the light and gasped. A magnificent reef stretched before them, glowing with a thousand colors. Corals pulsed with soft pink and blue light. Tiny glowing creatures danced in the water. "It's wonderful!" Shrimp cried. He swam forward without fear, his eyes wide with delight. Lanternfish followed, his heart full of joy. "See?" he said. "Courage grows when someone supports you." 12

Shrimp spun around in the glowing water. "I was so scared before," he said. "But with you beside me, I felt brave." Lanternfish nodded. "That's what friends are for," he said. "We help each other." Shrimp smiled, his antennae waving happily. "Thank you, Lanternfish," he said. "You're the best friend ever." They swam around the reef, exploring every glowing corner. 13

From that day on, Lanternfish and Shrimp were best friends. They explored the ocean every day, discovering new wonders. Shrimp was never afraid of the dark deep water again, because he knew his friend's glow would always be there. And whenever Shrimp felt nervous, Lanternfish would say, "I'm right here." And Shrimp would smile and say, "Then I'm brave." 14

One evening, as they rested on a soft sponge, Shrimp looked at the glowing reef in the distance. "You know," he said, "I used to think the dark was scary. But now I know it's full of wonderful things." Lanternfish's light flickered warmly. "The dark isn't scary when you have a friend," he said.
