Otter lives by a wide, winding river, spending his days swimming, splashing, and chasing shiny fish. With his brown fur and cream chest, he carries a small green satchel with a brass buckle, always ready for adventure. One day, while digging near the riverbank, his paw hits a flat stone, revealing a dark, secret tunnel. Curious but cautious, Otter wonders where it leads and what lies inside.
Just then, Maple the water vole appears, wearing round blue spectacles and carrying a rolled parchment map. Together, they decide to explore the tunnel, with Maple sketching the chambers and marking every turn. As they venture deeper, they encounter a family of field mice, a slippery mud path, a dripping cave, and a clear spring. Otter learns the value of moving slowly and carefully, especially when Maple warns him about soft ground and dark corners. When the tunnel grows dark, Maple produces a tiny lantern, and they discover a fork, a cozy nook, and a secret exit to the river.
This charming children's tale teaches young readers about the rewards of curiosity tempered with caution and the importance of friendship and teamwork. Otter's eagerness is balanced by Maple's thoughtful planning, showing that exploration is best when done smartly. The story is perfect for early elementary school children who enjoy animal adventures and gentle lessons about safety and cooperation.

A Passage from the Tale
The Otter's Secret Tunnel Çınar BİBER
Otter lived by a wide, winding river. Every morning he swam and splashed and chased shiny fish. His brown fur shone like wet stones, and his cream chest gleamed in the sun. He carried a small green satchel with a brass buckle, ready for adventures. One day, while digging near the riverbank, his webbed paw hit something hard. It was a flat stone, and behind it yawned a dark, secret tunnel. 1
Otter's eyes grew wide. A tunnel! Where did it go? He wanted to dash right in, but the darkness looked deep and quiet. He peeked inside and felt a cool, musty breeze. His whiskers twitched with excitement. 'I must explore this,' he whispered. But something told him to be careful. So he sat back on his broad tail and thought about what to do next. 2
Just then, Maple the water vole scurried by. She wore round blue spectacles and carried a rolled parchment map. 'Hello, Otter!' she squeaked. 'What have you found?' Otter showed her the tunnel. Maple's small black eyes sparkled. 'I can draw a map of the chambers,' she said, pulling a tiny red pencil from behind her ear. 'But we must go slowly and mark every turn.' 3
Otter nodded, though his paws were eager to race ahead. Maple unrolled her parchment and began to sketch. 'First, we need to see what's inside,' she said. They stepped into the tunnel together. The walls were cool and damp, and the floor was soft mud. Otter took a deep breath. 'Stay close,' said Maple. 'And watch for dark corners.' Otter promised to be careful, and they moved forward step by step. 4
The tunnel sloped down and curved left. Maple's pencil scratched softly as she drew. 'Here's a little chamber,' she said. They peeked inside. It was empty except for a few smooth pebbles. Otter wanted to hurry on, but Maple pointed to a shadowy nook. 'Let's check there first,' she said. Otter crept forward slowly. Suddenly, a tiny squeak made him jump. A family of field mice was huddled in the corner! 5
Otter's heart thumped, but he smiled. 'Sorry to scare you,' he said softly. The mice squeaked hello and scurried away. Maple drew a tiny mouse on the map. 'See?' she said. 'Dark corners can hide surprises. That's why we go with caution.' Otter nodded. He was glad he hadn't rushed. They continued on, their paws careful on the slippery mud. 6
The tunnel twisted right and opened into a bigger room. Water dripped from the ceiling, making a plink-plonk sound. Otter gasped. 'It's like a secret cave!' Maple smiled and sketched the room. 'Look,' she said, 'there's a narrow passage on the far side.' Otter started toward it, but Maple held up her paw. 'Wait,' she said. 'Let's test the ground first.' She tapped her little pink paw on the mud. It squelched. 'Soft here,' she warned. 'We'll go around.' 7
They found a drier path along the wall. Otter moved slowly, watching his step. He was learning that going carefully was part of the fun. The passage led to a little pool of clear water. Otter dipped his paw in. It was cold and fresh. 'This might be a spring,' said Maple, drawing it on the map. 'We can come back here for a drink.' Otter grinned. Exploring was better with a friend. 8
As they went deeper, the tunnel grew darker. Otter couldn't see very well. 'Maybe we should turn back,' he said. But Maple pulled out a tiny lantern from her pocket. 'I brought this just in case,' she said. The warm light flickered on the walls. Otter felt brave again. 'Thanks, Maple,' he said. 'You're a good friend.' Maple smiled and drew a little lantern on the map. 9
The lantern light showed a fork in the tunnel. 'Which way?' asked Otter. Maple studied her map. 'Let's mark this spot,' she said. She drew a star. 'We'll go left first, then come back and try right.' Otter agreed. They took the left path and found a cozy nook with soft moss. 'A perfect resting place,' said Maple. Otter curled up for a moment, his tail wrapped around him. 10
After their rest, they returned to the fork and took the right path. It sloped upward and ended at a small hole. Otter peeked through. 'I can see the river!' he cried. 'This is a secret exit!' Maple drew the exit on the map. 'Now we know two ways in and out,' she said. 'That's important for exploring safely.' Otter felt proud of their careful work. 11
They followed the tunnel back to the entrance, checking the map as they went. Otter remembered every turn. 'We did it!' he said. 'And we were careful the whole time.' Maple nodded. 'Caution isn't about being scared,' she said. 'It's about being smart.' Otter looked at the map. 'Can we explore more tomorrow?' he asked. 'Of course,' said Maple. 'But always with a map and a friend.' 12
Otter and Maple sat on the riverbank as the sun set. Otter opened his green satchel and carefully placed the map inside. 'This map is a treasure,' he said. 'It will help us remember all the secret places.' Maple smiled. 'And it will help other animals too,' she said. 'We can show them the safe paths.' Otter felt warm inside. He had learned that exploring was best when done with care.
