A Passage from the Tale

The Penguin's Missing Invitation Çınar BİBER

Pip the penguin lived by the windy coast. Every morning, he waddled out of his cozy burrow and pulled his little red knitted scarf tight. The wind sang through the tall grass, and the waves crashed on the rocks. Pip loved the salty smell of the sea and the feel of sand under his orange webbed feet. Today was special: he had a party invitation in his tiny brown satchel bag. 1

The invitation was for a big party at the lighthouse. Pip had been waiting all week. He took it out to read it again. It had shiny gold letters and a picture of a cake. Pip smiled and tucked it back into his satchel. Then he skipped along the sandy path, humming a happy tune. The wind blew softly, and the seagulls called from above. 2

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind whooshed along the coast. It tugged Pip's scarf and lifted his satchel flap. The invitation fluttered out and danced away! Pip gasped and ran after it. But the wind was too fast. The invitation sailed over the dunes and disappeared. Pip's bright blue eyes filled with tears. 'Oh no!' he cried. 'My invitation!' 3

Pip felt sad and worried. He sat on a rock and hugged his satchel. Just then, his friend Perry the petrel swooped down. Perry wore his blue sailor cap and yellow neckerchief. 'Hello, Pip! Why the long face?' he asked. Pip sniffled. 'I lost my party invitation. The wind took it.' Perry tilted his dark grey head. 'Don't worry. We'll find it together.' 4

Pip looked up at Perry. 'But I don't know where it went.' Perry smiled kindly. 'Let's retrace your steps. Where were you when it flew away?' Pip pointed along the coast. 'I was walking on the sandy path, near the tall grass.' Perry nodded. 'Then let's start there. The wind is strong today, but we can be stronger.' 5

As they walked, Pip's cheeks turned rosy. He stopped and said, 'Perry, I have to be honest. I was careless with the invitation. I took it out of my satchel and didn't hold it tight.' Perry patted Pip's flipper. 'Thank you for telling me, Pip. Being honest helps us solve the problem faster. Now we know exactly where to look.' 6

They reached the sandy path. The wind was still blowing, making little swirls in the sand. Pip and Perry searched carefully. They looked under tufts of grass and behind small stones. Perry used his long wings to brush the sand aside. 'Any sign of it?' he asked. Pip shook his head. 'Not yet. But I'm glad you're helping me.' 7

Next, they walked to the rocky shore. The waves splashed and the wind howled. Pip's red scarf flapped behind him. They checked between the rocks and in the crevices. Perry flew up to get a better view. 'I see something shiny near that big rock!' he called. Pip's heart beat fast. 'Is it my invitation?' 8

Perry landed beside Pip. 'Let's go see.' They scrambled over the rocks, being careful not to slip. The wind pushed against them, but they held on. Pip's orange feet gripped the slippery stones. 'I hope it's still there,' he said. Perry encouraged him. 'We're close. Keep going!' The shiny thing sparkled in the sunlight. 9

At last, they reached the big rock. There, stuck in a crack, was the invitation! It was a little crumpled, but still bright and shiny. Pip carefully pulled it out. 'We found it!' he cheered. Perry clapped his wings. 'You see? Being honest and searching together worked!' Pip hugged his friend. 'Thank you, Perry. I couldn't have done it without you.' 10

Pip looked at the invitation and then at Perry. 'I learned something today,' he said. 'When I admitted I was careless, it made it easier to fix.' Perry nodded. 'That's right, Pip. Mistakes are easier to solve when we're honest about them. And friends help each other.' Pip smiled and tucked the invitation safely back into his satchel. 11

The wind began to calm down, and the sun peeked through the clouds. Pip and Perry walked back along the coast together. Pip held his satchel tight. 'I'll be more careful next time,' he promised. Perry adjusted his sailor cap. 'I know you will. Now, let's get you to that party!' They laughed and hurried along the sandy path. 12

When they reached the lighthouse, the party was just beginning. Pip showed his invitation to the host, a friendly walrus with a big smile. 'Welcome, Pip!' said the walrus. 'And who's your friend?' Pip proudly introduced Perry. 'This is Perry. He helped me find my invitation.' They went inside, where music and laughter filled the air. 13

Pip and Perry played games and ate fish-shaped cookies. Pip told everyone the story of the windy adventure. 'I lost my invitation, but my friend Perry helped me retrace my steps. And I learned that being honest makes problems easier to solve.' The other animals nodded and smiled. Perry felt proud of his honest friend. 14

As the party ended, Pip and Perry walked home under the starry sky. Pip's red scarf kept him warm. 'Thank you for being such a good friend,' Pip said. Perry smiled. 'Thank you for being honest, Pip. That's what friends are for.' They promised to meet again the next day for another windy adventure.
