A Passage from the Tale

The Squirrel's Secret Ladder Çınar BİBER

High in the green forest, where the trees grew tall and the leaves whispered secrets, lived a squirrel named Sam. Sam had russet-orange fur, a creamy white belly, and a fluffy curved tail that flicked with curiosity. He carried a small woven vine satchel in leaf-green over one shoulder. Every morning, Sam scampered through the branches, always on the lookout for adventure and tasty treats. 1

The tastiest nuts in the whole forest grew at the very top of the tallest trees, where the branches were thin and the wind blew strong. Sam's round dark brown eyes sparkled whenever he looked up there. 'If only I could reach those nuts,' he said, twitching his tiny pink nose. 'They must be the sweetest in the world!' He tapped his little foot, thinking hard. 2

Sam had an idea. He would build a secret ladder between the trees, a special path that only he knew about. He gathered twigs and vines, and he worked all afternoon, tying and twisting and knotting. His tufted ears wiggled with excitement. 'This will be my secret ladder,' he whispered. 'I'll climb up and down and feast on nuts every day!' 3

On the first day, the ladder worked perfectly. Sam climbed up and down with ease, and he filled his green vine satchel with nuts. 'I'm the cleverest squirrel in the forest!' he bragged, curling his fluffy tail proudly. But as the days passed, the twigs began to dry and the vines began to loosen. Sam didn't notice. He was too busy enjoying his secret. 4

One sunny morning, Sam started to climb. Halfway up, the ladder wobbled. Sam froze. 'Whoa!' he squeaked. The ladder shook and swayed, and the steps creaked under his tiny feet. Sam's big brown eyes grew wide. 'Oh no,' he whispered. 'My secret ladder is not safe!' He clung to the tree, not sure what to do. 5

Just then, a friendly woodpecker named Wally flew by. Wally had black and white barred feathers, a bright red crest, and a long grey beak. He wore a tiny red tool belt around his waist. 'Hello, Sam!' chirped Wally. 'You look worried. What's wrong?' Sam pointed a shaky paw at the wobbling ladder. 'It shakes,' he said. 'I don't know how to fix it.' 6

Wally hopped onto a branch and studied the ladder with his small dark eyes. 'I see the problem,' he said. 'The steps need stronger pegs. I can help you with that. My beak is perfect for pecking wooden pegs into place.' Sam's ears perked up. 'Really? You would help me?' Wally nodded. 'Of course! Teamwork makes everything better.' 7

Wally flew to a nearby branch and found some sturdy twigs. He pecked and pecked, shaping them into strong wooden pegs. Sam gathered more vines to tie them tight. 'Hold this steady,' Wally said. Sam held the ladder while Wally tapped the pegs into each step. Peck, peck, peck! The sound echoed through the trees. 'This is fun!' Sam giggled. 8

They worked together all morning. Wally pecked strong wooden pegs into every step, and Sam tied the vines securely. 'Now test it,' Wally said. Sam climbed up slowly. The ladder felt firm and steady. He climbed higher and higher. 'It's perfect!' he cheered. 'No more wobbling!' Wally smiled. 'That's because we fixed it together.' 9

From that day on, Sam's ladder was the safest in the forest. He climbed up and down with a big happy smile, his green satchel full of nuts. Wally often flew by to check on him. 'Everything steady?' he would ask. 'Steady as can be!' Sam would reply. And they would both laugh, happy in their teamwork. 10

Sam learned an important lesson. 'I thought I could do everything alone,' he told Wally. 'But working together made the ladder safer and better.' Wally nodded. 'That's right. Everyone needs a little help sometimes.' Sam's brown eyes sparkled. 'You're a great friend, Wally.' Wally's red crest bobbed. 'And you are too, Sam.' 11

Now, whenever Sam climbs his secret ladder, he feels proud and safe. The strong wooden pegs hold every step firmly in place. He knows that Wally's help made all the difference. 'Teamwork is the best,' Sam says. And he always leaves a few nuts at the top for Wally to share. 'Friends share everything,' Sam says with a smile. 12

One afternoon, Sam invited Wally to join him at the top of the trees. 'Come on up!' Sam called. Wally flew up and landed beside him. They sat together on a high branch, munching sweet nuts and watching the sun set. 'This is the best view in the forest,' Wally said. Sam nodded. 'And the best company,' he added. 13

Sam looked at his ladder, now strong and steady. 'I'll always remember to ask for help when I need it,' he said. Wally chirped. 'And I'll always be happy to help a friend.' They shared the last nut, splitting it in two. 'To teamwork,' Sam said. 'To safety,' Wally replied. And they both laughed, their voices ringing through the trees. 14

Sam's secret ladder wasn't a secret anymore. All the animals in the forest knew about it, and they knew it was safe. Sometimes, other squirrels asked Sam to build ladders for them. Sam always said yes, and Wally always helped. 'Teamwork makes everything better,' Sam would say. And everyone agreed.
