In a cozy woodland clearing beside a sparkling stream lives Tilly, a gentle turtle with a smooth domed shell, a soft red scarf and a small woven satchel for her supplies. She loves the yearly lantern festival more than anything, when every animal in the forest gathers to share light and joy. With only three days to go, Tilly bustles about collecting paper, string and tiny candles, humming a happy tune while her friends prepare their own lanterns to hang high in the trees.

When the lanterns are hung, Pip the mouse and Bramble the rabbit discover that theirs dangle far beyond reach, and the smaller animals begin to feel left out of the celebration. Tilly notices their worried faces and, with paper and string from her satchel, sets to work on an idea of her own: low lanterns that the smallest creatures can light themselves. Pip carries string in his quick paws and Bramble brings more paper as the afternoon passes.

A Passage from the Tale

The Turtle's Paper Lantern Çınar BİBER

In a cozy woodland clearing, a gentle turtle named Tilly lived by a sparkling stream. She wore a soft red scarf and carried a small woven satchel for her supplies. Tilly loved the yearly lantern festival more than anything. Every animal in the forest came to share the light and joy. She smiled warmly, her round dark-brown eyes twinkling with excitement. 1

The lantern festival was only three days away. Tilly bustled about, gathering paper, string, and tiny candles. Her smooth domed shell was patterned in brown and gold. She hummed a happy tune as she worked. 'This year will be the best festival ever!' she said. All her animal friends were busy preparing too, each making a special lantern to hang high in the trees. 2

Pip the mouse, no bigger than a leaf, scampered up to Tilly. He wore a tiny blue vest and a yellow ribbon tied at his tail. 'I can't wait for the festival!' Pip squeaked, his bright black eyes shining. Bramble the rabbit hopped over, her long ears twitching. 'I made a lantern with wooden buttons!' she announced proudly, adjusting her green knitted vest. 3

Tilly decided to make a big, beautiful lantern for herself. She cut paper into star shapes and glued them carefully. Her short sturdy legs worked slowly but steadily. 'This lantern will shine so bright!' she said. She placed a tiny candle inside and tied a string to the top. The lantern glowed with warm golden light, and Tilly felt very proud. 4

All around the clearing, animals were hanging their lanterns high in the branches. Tall deer and sturdy bears reached up easily. But Pip the mouse and Bramble the rabbit stood below, looking up with worried faces. The lanterns dangled far above their heads. 'We can't reach them,' Pip whispered, his whiskers drooping. 'How will we light our lanterns?' 5

Bramble tried to jump, but the lanterns were too high. 'Even my long ears can't help,' she sighed. The smaller animals gathered together, feeling left out. Tilly watched from a distance, her kind heart aching. She saw their sad faces and knew she had to help. 'Everyone should enjoy the festival,' she thought, tapping her chin with a sturdy leg. 6

Tilly opened her woven satchel and pulled out extra paper and string. 'I have an idea!' she exclaimed. She hurried to a low branch and began to tie a small lantern close to the ground. 'These lanterns will be just for you,' she told Pip and Bramble. The little animals' eyes grew wide with wonder. 'Really? For us?' Pip squeaked, his nose twitching. 7

Tilly worked all afternoon, her gentle wrinkled smile never fading. She made low lanterns for all the small creatures. Each one was decorated with colorful leaves and tiny flowers. Pip helped by carrying string in his small quick paws. Bramble brought more paper in her orange shoulder bag. 'This is fun!' Bramble cheered, her fluffy tail wiggling. 8

As the sun began to set, Tilly hung the last low lantern. The small animals gathered around, their faces glowing with happiness. 'Now we can light them ourselves!' Pip cheered. He lit his lantern with a tiny match, and it flickered to life. Bramble lit hers too, and soon a row of low lanterns twinkled like little stars near the ground. 9

The festival began, and the whole forest sparkled with light. High lanterns swayed in the breeze, and low lanterns glowed warmly below. Every animal could see and share the light. Tilly's big lantern shone brightly, but she felt even happier seeing the small animals' joyful faces. 'This is what sharing means,' she said softly, her red scarf fluttering. 10

Pip danced around his low lantern, his yellow tail ribbon bouncing. 'I can reach it! I can reach it!' he sang. Bramble clapped her paws and hopped in a circle. 'Tilly, you are so kind!' she said. The other animals cheered and thanked Tilly. The festival became the best ever, filled with laughter and light. Everyone felt included and happy. 11

Tilly blushed and smiled. 'We all make the festival special,' she said. 'Every animal, big or small, should share the light.' The animals nodded, their hearts warm. They realized that kindness and sharing made everything better. From that day on, they always made sure everyone could join the fun. The lantern festival became a celebration of togetherness. 12

As the night went on, the animals sang songs and told stories. Tilly sat with Pip and Bramble, feeling content. The low lanterns glowed like little fireflies, and the high lanterns sparkled above. 'Let's do this every year,' Bramble said. 'Yes!' everyone agreed. The festival was not just about lanterns; it was about friends and kindness. 13

When the festival ended, the animals packed up slowly, still smiling. Tilly gathered her satchel and looked at the clearing. 'Same time next year?' she asked. 'Same time!' they cheered. Pip hugged Tilly's leg, and Bramble gave her a high-five. The lanterns flickered out one by one, but the warmth in their hearts stayed bright. 14

Back at her cozy home by the stream, Tilly hung her red scarf on a hook. She thought about the happy faces of her friends. 'Inclusion makes celebrations better,' she said to herself. She knew that small acts of kindness could light up the whole forest. With a gentle smile, she settled into her shell and dreamed of next year's festival.
