🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:10

Wren is a humpback whale, fifteen metres long and gentle by nature, who glides through the wide blue ocean feeling a little lonely in its vast silence. One morning near a coral reef she finds a spiral conch shell, pearly pink and turquoise, that hums with an ancient magic. Realising it can carry a voice across the water, she sings a friendship song into it and sends it out to her dear friend Finn, a young bottlenose dolphin who lives far away on the other side of the sea.

Finn hears the faint melody while leaping through sparkling water, recognises Wren's low, warm voice and answers through a glowing shell of his own. Back and forth their songs travel, each reply lighting the shell a little brighter, until the two friends are singing to each other as often as they like. Through Wren's quiet worry and Finn's cheerful loyalty, the story shows young readers how friendship survives distance when someone makes the effort to reach out.

The book is written for children in the early primary years, whether they are being read to at bedtime or reading short chapters on their own. Its simple, musical rhymes, vivid sea imagery and calm pacing make it a gentle introduction to the idea that being apart from someone you love is not the same as being forgotten, and that a small act of reaching out can make a very large ocean feel much smaller.

A Passage from the Tale

The Whale's Postcard Çınar BİBER

Once, in the wide blue ocean, there lived a humpback whale named Wren. She was enormous, about fifteen metres long, with deep blue-grey skin and a pale mottled belly. Her long flippers arched gracefully through the water, and her gentle dark eyes sparkled with soft white highlights. Wren was kind and shy, but sometimes she felt a little lonely in the vast, quiet sea. 1

One morning, Wren was gliding near a coral reef when something caught her eye. A spiral conch shell lay on the sandy bottom, pearly pink and turquoise, glowing softly from within. Delicate gold shimmer traced its ridges, and tiny sparkles drifted from its opening. Wren gently scooped it up with her flipper. 'How beautiful,' she whispered. 'I wonder what you can do.' 2

As Wren held the shell, it began to hum a soft, mysterious tune. She felt a warm tingle and knew this was no ordinary shell. It was a magical shell, ancient and gentle, a messenger of the sea. Wren's heart beat faster. 'Maybe,' she thought, 'I can send a song to my friend Dolphin, who lives far away across the ocean.' 3

Wren took a deep breath and sang her friendship song into the shell. Her voice was low and rumbling, like distant thunder, but full of warmth. 'Hello, Dolphin, my friend so dear, I miss you though you're far from here. The ocean wide and deep and blue, still carries my friendship true to you.' The shell glowed brighter with every note. 4

The magical shell sparkled and shimmered, then released the song in ripples of light. The ripples danced across the water, carrying Wren's voice through the deep. Wren watched hopefully as the glowing notes drifted away. 'Please find my friend,' she whispered. 'Please let him hear my song.' Then she waited, her broad tail swishing gently. 5

Far away, across the wide ocean, a young bottlenose dolphin named Finn was leaping playfully through sparkling water. His silver-grey skin shone in the sun, and his cream underside gleamed. With a smiling beak and bright dark eyes, he loved to explore. Suddenly, a faint melody reached his ears. He stopped and tilted his head. 'What's that lovely sound?' 6

The melody grew clearer, and Finn recognized the voice. It was Wren, his dear friend! The song wrapped around him like a warm hug. 'Wren misses me,' he said, his heart filling with joy. 'I must answer her!' He looked around and saw a shimmering trail of light leading to a small, glowing shell resting on a rock. 7

Finn swam to the shell and carefully picked it up with his flipper. It was pearly pink and turquoise, just like the one Wren had found. He knew this was the messenger. 'Thank you, magical shell,' he said. 'Now I can sing back to my friend.' He took a deep breath and sang a cheerful, whistling tune into the shell's opening. 8

Finn's song was full of joy and loyalty. 'Hello, Wren, my friend so kind, your song is always on my mind. Though waves may roll and distances grow, our friendship continues to glow and glow.' The shell sparkled and sent his song across the sea, a trail of musical ripples racing through the water. 9

Back near the coral reef, Wren was waiting. She had not moved far, hoping for an answer. Suddenly, the shell in her flipper began to glow and hum. A familiar whistling melody floated out, and Wren's eyes widened with delight. 'It's Finn!' she cried. 'He heard me! He sang back!' Her heart felt lighter than it had in days. 10

Wren listened to Finn's song again and again, and each time she felt happier. She sang another song into the shell, thanking him and telling him about her day. The shell carried her words across the ocean, and soon Finn's reply came back. They sang back and forth, their friendship growing stronger with every note. 11

The magical shell glowed brighter with each exchange, its pearly colors swirling with joy. Wren realized that even though they were far apart, their friendship stayed strong. 'The ocean isn't so big after all,' she said. 'A song can travel anywhere.' She felt less lonely than ever before, knowing Finn was just a song away. 12

From that day on, Wren and Finn sent songs to each other often. The shell became their special messenger, always ready to carry their voices across the waves. Other sea creatures noticed the glowing ripples and smiled. The ocean felt smaller and much friendlier now, because a song can travel anywhere. 13

Wren no longer felt lonely. She knew that Finn was thinking of her, and that their friendship could span any distance. She swam through the deep blue water with a happy heart, her long flippers arching gracefully. The magical shell rested in her flipper, a warm reminder that friends are never truly far away. 14

Finn, too, felt the warmth of their connection. He leaped and spun in the sparkling waves, his smiling beak open wide. He knew that Wren was out there, and that their songs would always find each other. The ocean was full of music and friendship, and he was grateful for both. 15

And so, the whale and the dolphin remained the best of friends, even across the wide, wide ocean. They learned that friendship can span great distances, and that a song can travel anywhere. The magical shell still glows softly, ready to carry a message of love from one friend to another, across the endless blue.
