🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:14

Wombat lives in a cozy burrow at the edge of a sunny garden, and every morning he packs his mustard-yellow explorer satchel with snacks and a rolled map. One day, while digging near an old oak tree, his claws strike something hard: a stone door hidden beneath the roots. Behind it lies a dark tunnel that smells of damp earth and something sweet, and Wombat knows he has found something worth exploring. Because the darkness makes him cautious, he turns to his clever friend Echidna, who wears round blue spectacles, carries a green pencil case, and loves making maps.

Together the two friends step into the tunnel with a small lantern and a sharpened pencil. They meet three twisty paths marked with glowing symbols, a chamber holding a tiny glowing seed, a narrow passage that leads to an underground stream, and a wide cavern with a broken pot. When the symbols fade and the way seems lost, Echidna realizes the seed itself glows brighter in the right direction, and the friends learn to trust both their careful notes and their teamwork. A steep slope, a mossy landing, and a leaf-shaped keyhole bring them at last to a forgotten underground garden full of glowing plants.

The story follows Wombat and Echidna as they map each chamber, refill their bottles, and care for the wilted flowers they find. It is a gentle adventure about curiosity, preparation, and friendship, showing young readers that courage grows when you bring a friend along and that careful observation can turn a frightening darkness into a path worth following. Children who enjoy animal explorers, secret passages, and quiet discoveries will feel at home in this tunnel.

A Passage from the Tale

The Wombat's Secret Tunnel Çınar BİBER

Wombat lived in a cozy burrow at the edge of a sunny garden. Every morning, he packed his mustard-yellow explorer satchel with snacks and a rolled map. He loved to dig and discover new things. One day, while digging near an old oak tree, his sturdy claws hit something hard. It was a stone door hidden under the roots! 1

Wombat pushed the stone door with all his might. It creaked open, showing a dark tunnel going deep underground. A cool breeze blew out, carrying a smell of damp earth and something sweet. Wombat's small dark eyes grew wide. "A secret tunnel!" he whispered. He wanted to explore it right away, but the darkness made him feel a little cautious. 2

Wombat remembered his friend Echidna, who was very clever and loved making maps. Echidna lived under a pile of leaves nearby, wearing round blue spectacles and carrying a green pencil case. Wombat hurried to her. "Echidna, I found an ancient tunnel! Will you help me explore and map it?" Echidna's amber eyes sparkled. "Of course! Let's pack our things." 3

The two friends stood at the tunnel entrance. Wombat switched on his small lantern, and Echidna sharpen her pencil. "We'll map every chamber," she said, "so we don't get lost." They stepped inside, and the tunnel swallowed them in darkness. The walls were covered in strange symbols that glowed faintly. Wombat felt a shiver, but Echidna squeezed his paw. "Teamwork will keep us safe." 4

The tunnel split into three twisty paths. "Which way?" asked Wombat. Echidna studied the symbols on the wall. "These look like clues," she said, tracing a spiral with her claw. "This one points left." They followed the left path, which sloped downward. The air grew warmer, and the symbols glowed brighter. Wombat's sturdy legs carried him steadily, and Echidna's pencil scribbled notes on her map. 5

Soon they entered a small chamber with a stone pedestal. On it lay a tiny glowing seed. "Look!" said Wombat. Echidna carefully picked it up. "It's a clue," she said. "Maybe it belongs to a garden." She drew the chamber on her map and marked the seed with a star. They decided to follow the tunnel further, hoping to find more clues. 6

The next path twisted like a snake. Wombat had to squeeze through narrow gaps, and Echidna's spines brushed the walls. They heard a soft dripping sound. "Water!" said Wombat. They found a small underground stream. Echidna tested the water with her snout. "It's fresh," she said. "We can refill our bottles." They rested by the stream, and Echidna updated the map with the stream's location. 7

After the stream, the tunnel opened into a wide cavern. In the center stood a stone table with a broken pot. "Another clue?" Wombat wondered. Echidna examined the pot. "It has the same symbols," she said. "I think it once held a plant." She sketched the pot and added it to the map. Wombat felt a thrill. They were getting closer to something special. 8

They continued, but the tunnel forked again. This time, the symbols were faded. "I can't read them," Echidna admitted. Wombat's ears drooped. "Maybe we should turn back." But Echidna adjusted her spectacles. "Wait! The seed is glowing brighter in this direction." She held it out, and the glow pointed right. "The seed is our guide!" They followed the right path, feeling hopeful. 9

The right path led to a steep slope. Wombat slipped and tumbled down, but he landed softly on a pile of moss. "Are you okay?" called Echidna from above. "Yes!" said Wombat. "But how will you get down?" Echidna thought for a moment. "I'll slide on my spiny back!" She curled into a ball and rolled down, landing beside Wombat with a giggle. They both laughed, glad to be together. 10

At the bottom, they found a heavy stone door with a keyhole shaped like a leaf. "The seed!" said Echidna. She placed the glowing seed into the keyhole. The door rumbled open, and a soft light spilled out. They stepped through and gasped. Before them was a vast underground garden filled with glowing plants of every color. Mushrooms glowed blue, flowers shimmered pink, and vines sparkled like stars. 11

"We found it!" Wombat whispered. "A forgotten garden!" Echidna quickly sketched the garden on her map. They explored the winding paths, marveling at the glowing plants. Wombat noticed a patch of wilted flowers. "These need water," he said. Using his strong claws, he dug a small channel from the stream to the flowers. Water flowed, and the flowers perked up, glowing brighter. 12

Echidna discovered a stone tablet with more symbols. "It tells how to care for the garden," she said. Together, they read the clues: water the plants, keep the lanterns lit, and share the garden's beauty. Wombat felt proud. "We couldn't have done this alone," he said. Echidna nodded. "Teamwork made it possible." They promised to visit often and keep the garden alive. 13

Back home, Wombat unrolled the map in his burrow. It showed every chamber, the stream, and the glowing garden. He added a new note: "Explored with Echidna." Wombat smiled, remembering their adventure. He learned that exploring is more fun with a friend. The tunnel's secret was safe with them, and the garden would always glow, thanks to their teamwork.
