A Passage from the Tale

The Boy and the Sheep Çınar BİBER

In a bright green meadow, a small boy named Leo liked to wander. He wore a mustard yellow t-shirt and blue denim overalls, with a little red neckerchief tied at his neck. His boots were small and brown, perfect for walking through the soft grass. Leo was seven years old, with warm brown skin and freckles across his nose. He loved to explore and find new friends. 1

One sunny morning, Leo saw a sheep standing alone under a big oak tree. She was elderly, with thick cream-white wool that looked a little grey around her muzzle. Her long floppy ears hung down, and a faded blue ribbon was tied loosely around her neck. She had warm amber eyes and a calm, sleepy expression. Leo walked closer, feeling curious and gentle. 2

"Hello, sheep," Leo said softly. The sheep looked at him and blinked slowly. She didn't run away. Leo sat down on the grass a little distance away. The sheep watched him for a moment, then went back to nibbling the grass. Leo smiled. He felt happy just sitting there with her. From that day on, he visited her every morning. 3

Every day, Leo came to the meadow to see the sheep. He learned that her name was Clara. The tall caretaker, Mr. Thomas, told him so. Mr. Thomas wore a green work shirt and a wide straw hat. He watched over the meadow and all the animals. "Clara is old and gentle," Mr. Thomas said. "She likes quiet company." Leo nodded and promised to be gentle. 4

Leo discovered that Clara had favorite resting places. One was under the big oak tree, where the grass was soft and cool. Another was near a small bush of wildflowers. Clara would lie down there and close her eyes. Leo learned to recognize these spots. He would bring a book and sit nearby, reading quietly while Clara rested. The sun felt warm on their backs. 5

Mr. Thomas showed Leo how to care for Clara. "She needs fresh water every day," he said. Leo filled a bucket from the well and carried it to the field. Clara drank slowly, and Leo waited patiently. Then Mr. Thomas gave Leo a soft brush. "Brush her wool gently," he said. Leo brushed Clara's thick fleece, careful not to pull. Clara seemed to enjoy it. 6

Leo learned to check Clara's hooves for stones. Mr. Thomas showed him how to lift each leg and look. "Always be gentle," Mr. Thomas reminded him. Leo was gentle. He spoke softly to Clara, and she stood still. Sometimes Mr. Thomas would smile and say, "You have a good touch, Leo." Leo felt proud. He liked helping Clara. 7

Clara began to trust Leo. When he arrived in the morning, she would walk to meet him. Her floppy ears would perk up a little. Leo would pat her head and say, "Good morning, Clara." Then they would go to her favorite resting spot together. Clara would lie down, and Leo would sit beside her. He felt calm and happy. The meadow was peaceful. 8

One day, dark clouds covered the sky. A cold wind blew across the meadow. Clara shivered. Leo saw that she was cold. He ran to Mr. Thomas. "Clara is cold," he said. Mr. Thomas nodded. "Let's move her to the shed," he said. Together, they led Clara to a warm shed filled with dry straw. Clara lay down, and Leo covered her with a blanket. 9

The rain came, but Clara was safe and warm. Leo stayed with her in the shed. He brought her fresh hay and water. Mr. Thomas checked on them. "You take good care of her," he said. Leo smiled. He felt glad that he could help. Clara rested, and Leo sat beside her, listening to the rain on the roof. It was cozy and quiet. 10

After the rain, the sun came out again. Clara was ready to go back to the meadow. Leo led her out. She walked slowly, and Leo matched her pace. They went to her favorite spot under the oak tree. The grass was fresh and green. Clara lay down and sighed happily. Leo sat beside her. He felt peaceful. Their friendship had grown strong. 11

Mr. Thomas came to check on them. He saw Leo sitting quietly with Clara. "You know," he said, "Clara has not been this happy in a long time. You have a gentle heart, Leo." Leo looked at Clara. She blinked her warm amber eyes at him. He felt a warm glow inside. He knew that being gentle and kind was important. 12

Leo learned that quiet companionship is valuable. He didn't need to run or shout. Just sitting with Clara made him feel calm. Clara trusted him, and that trust made Leo feel special. They had become good friends. Every day, Leo looked forward to their time together. It was the best part of his day. 13

Now, Leo visits Clara every morning. He knows all her favorite resting places. He helps with her care, always gentle and kind. Mr. Thomas watches over them, but he gives them space to be together. Clara's faded blue ribbon flutters in the breeze. Leo sits close, and they rest in the soft grass. Their friendship is simple and true. 14

Sometimes other children come to the meadow. Leo shows them how to be gentle with Clara. "Move slowly," he says. "Speak softly." The children learn to brush Clara's wool and give her water. Clara enjoys the company. Leo feels happy to share his friend. Mr. Thomas smiles and says, "You are a good teacher, Leo." Leo beams with pride.
