The Little Koala's Question

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:08

High in a eucalyptus tree in a tall, green forest lives a little koala named Kip, whose days are spent chewing leaves and listening to the sounds around him. When he nibbles a leaf from his own tree and then one from the tree next door, he notices that they look the same but taste completely different. That small observation becomes a question that buzzes in his head, and it sets the whole story in motion.

A possum named Pip, carrying a little blue backpack and a notebook, offers to help Kip find out why. Together the two friends climb through the forest, tasting narrow lemon-scented leaves, soft silver ones, bitter flat ones and tiny spicy ones, and writing down what they find. A butterfly points them toward the creek, where the leaves taste extra sweet, and Kip begins to notice that trees grow in different places and under different conditions. Their collecting turns into a leaf map, and soon other animals join in, adding their own discoveries until the forest feels like one big team of explorers.

The story follows a gentle, curious pair of friends rather than a grand adventure, and it shows young readers that a simple question can lead to real learning. It is suited to children being read to at bedtime or beginning to read on their own, and to anyone who wants a quiet tale about curiosity, friendship and enjoying the surprises of the natural world.

A Passage from the Tale

The Little Koala's Question Çınar BİBER

In a tall, green forest, a little koala named Kip lived high in the branches of a eucalyptus tree. The sunlight made dappled patterns on his soft grey fur, and his big dark eyes blinked slowly as he chewed a leaf. His fluffy round ears swiveled to listen to the forest sounds. Kip loved his home, but lately, one small question had begun to tickle his thoughts. 1

Kip nibbled a leaf from his tree. It tasted fresh and minty. Then he tried a leaf from the tree next door. It tasted sweet, like honey! Kip's broad black nose twitched with surprise. He looked at the two leaves, one in each tiny claw. They looked the same, but they tasted so different. Why? The question buzzed in his head like a little bee. 2

Just then, a possum named Pip scampered down the trunk. Pip's warm brownish-grey fur was ruffled from climbing, and his long pink-tipped tail curled around a branch. He carried a little blue backpack for collecting leaves. "What are you thinking about, Kip?" Pip asked, his bright amber eyes twinkling. Kip held up the two leaves. "Why do they taste different?" he wondered. 3

Pip's pointed pink nose wiggled. "That's a great question!" he said. "Let's find out!" He opened his blue backpack and pulled out a tiny notebook. "We can collect leaves from different trees and compare them." Kip's big dark eyes grew wide with excitement. He tied his green scarf a little tighter. "Really? We can do that?" he asked. "Of course!" said Pip. "Adventures start with questions!" 4

The two friends set off through the forest. Pip led the way, his tail swishing as he climbed. They stopped at a tree with narrow, long leaves. Kip sniffed one. "This smells like lemon!" he said. Pip wrote in his notebook. Then they found a tree with round, silver leaves. "These feel soft," Kip said, rubbing one against his cheek. "And they taste a little like tea," he added, nibbling carefully. 5

Next, they discovered a tree with wide, flat leaves. Kip took a bite. "Yuck!" he said, making a funny face. "That's bitter!" Pip laughed. "At least we know!" he said, writing it down. They walked further and found a tree with tiny, thin leaves. "These are crunchy and spicy!" Kip exclaimed. Each tree was different, and each leaf had its own taste. Kip's question was growing into a wonderful discovery. 6

As they explored, Kip noticed something else. The trees grew in different places. Some liked sunny spots, others liked shade. "Maybe the sunlight changes the taste?" Kip wondered. Pip nodded thoughtfully. "Or the soil, or the rain," he said. "We can't know for sure, but we can keep asking!" Kip felt a warm glow. Asking questions was fun, especially with a friend. 7

They met a friendly butterfly who fluttered by. "Have you tried the leaves near the creek?" she asked. "They taste extra sweet!" Kip and Pip looked at each other. "Let's go!" they said together. They followed the butterfly to the creek, where the trees leaned over the water. Kip tried a leaf. "Mmm! It's like candy!" he said. Pip added it to their collection. 8

By now, Pip's blue backpack was full of leaves. "We have so many kinds!" Pip said. "But we still don't know why they taste different." Kip didn't mind. He had learned so much already. "Maybe we don't need to know everything," he said. "Maybe it's enough to enjoy the different tastes." Pip smiled. "You're right. But let's keep exploring anyway!" 9

They climbed higher into the canopy, where the leaves were high and fresh. Kip's fluffy ears brushed against branches, and his green scarf fluttered in the breeze. "Look!" Pip pointed. "A tree with leaves that change color!" Kip tasted one. "It's minty, then sweet!" he said. "That's amazing!" Pip wrote it down. "This forest is full of surprises!" 10

Suddenly, Kip had an idea. "Pip, let's make a leaf map!" he said. "We can show which trees taste which way!" Pip's amber eyes lit up. "What a great idea!" They spread out their leaves on a flat rock. Pip drew a map of the forest, and they placed each leaf on the spot where they found it. The map was colorful and full of notes. 11

Other animals gathered around to see. A little bird chirped, "Can we help?" Soon, rabbits, squirrels, and even a shy turtle added their own leaf discoveries. Kip and Pip's map grew bigger and more beautiful. Everyone had questions, and everyone learned something new. The forest felt like one big team of explorers. 12

As the sun began to set, Kip looked at the map. "We started with one question," he said, "and now we have a whole map of tastes!" Pip nodded. "That's what questions do," he said. "They lead to discoveries you never expected." Kip smiled. "I'm glad I asked," he said. "And I'm glad you helped me, Pip." 13

Pip packed the map carefully into his blue backpack. "We can add more tomorrow," he said. "There are still trees we haven't tried!" Kip yawned. It had been a long, exciting day. "I can't wait," he said. "But first, a nap." He curled up on a soft branch, his green scarf tucked under his chin. Pip curled his tail around a twig and closed his eyes too.
