On the first warm morning of summer, a boy named Mateo runs down to the beach with his canvas tote bag, ready to help. Near the dunes he meets Maya, a young volunteer in a teal shirt with a sea turtle logo, and Sam, an older man in an orange vest and straw hat. They welcome him to turtle beach and explain that mother sea turtles come to this sand at night to dig deep holes and lay their eggs. The sand must be clean and quiet, they tell him, because litter and noise can frighten a shy turtle away. Mateo pulls on soft gloves and begins picking up plastic cups and tangled string, learning from Sam that every little piece matters.
Soon Maya invites Mateo to help teach visitors how to keep the beach quiet after dark. He politely asks beachgoers to keep the sand clean and to lower their voices at night, and he feels taller with every kind word he shares. As the sun sinks, Sam gathers everyone in a quiet circle and explains that the hardest part is waiting, because patience is a kind of care. Maya gives Mateo a small flashlight covered with red cloth, gentle on turtle eyes, and Sam marks the nesting zone with wooden signs.
Mateo sits in the soft sand and waits while the waves roll in and out. At last a large green-brown sea turtle rises from the shallows and slowly climbs the beach. Mateo holds his breath and stays perfectly still as she digs, lays her eggs and sweeps sand over the nest. The story shows young readers how patience, quiet and small acts of care can protect the animals that share our shores. It is suited to children in the early school years and to anyone reading aloud with them.

A Passage from the Tale
The Boy and the Sea Turtle Çınar BİBER
On the first warm morning of summer, a boy named Mateo ran down to the beach. He wore his bright yellow T-shirt, his red bucket hat, and his white sneakers. He carried a small canvas tote bag for collecting litter. The sand felt warm under his feet, and the sea whispered hello. Mateo smiled his gap-toothed smile and looked out at the shining water. 1
Near the dunes, Mateo saw people in bright shirts. One was a tall young woman named Maya. Her teal shirt had a sea turtle logo, and she held a clipboard. Beside her stood an older man named Sam in an orange vest and a wide straw hat. They waved Mateo over like old friends. "Welcome to turtle beach," said Maya kindly. 2
Maya showed Mateo a poster of a big green-brown sea turtle. "Mother turtles come to this sand at night," she said. "They dig a deep hole and lay their eggs." Mateo's dark brown eyes grew wide. "Right here?" he asked. "Right here," said Sam, tapping his walking stick softly on the sand. "And they need our help." 3
Maya handed Mateo a pair of soft gloves. "The sand must be clean and quiet," she explained. "Litter and noise can scare a mother turtle away." Sam nodded slowly. "The sea turtle is shy and slow," he said. "She is determined, but she needs patience from us." Mateo pulled on the gloves and felt important already. 4
Mateo walked along the shore with his tote bag, picking up plastic cups and tangled bits of string. Sam followed with his walking stick, pointing out small things people left behind. "Every little piece matters," Sam said. "A clean beach is a safe beach." Mateo nodded and kept collecting. The bag grew heavier, and the sand grew neater. 5
Then Maya called the volunteers together. "Visitors need to learn," she said, "how to keep the beach quiet at night." She looked at Mateo. "Would you like to help us teach them?" Mateo's heart thumped happily. "Me?" he asked. "Yes, you," said Maya with a warm smile. "You already know why it matters." 6
Mateo stood beside Maya near the path and greeted beachgoers. "Please keep the sand clean," he said politely. "And please be quiet after dark, because sea turtles nest here." Some people listened closely. Some people asked questions. One man with a big radio turned it off right away. Mateo felt taller with every kind word he shared. 7
A family came by with a bag of snacks. Mateo pointed to a litter bin nearby. "Could you keep your wrappers safe?" he asked. The children nodded and picked up every crumb. Maya gave Mateo a small thumbs-up. "You are a wonderful teacher," she whispered. "You explain things gently, and people listen." Mateo grinned so wide his gap showed. 8
As the sun began to sink, Sam gathered everyone in a quiet circle. "Now comes the hard part," he said, his pale blue eyes twinkling. "Waiting." He told a story about a turtle he once watched for three whole hours. "Patience," he said, "is a kind of care." Mateo listened and decided he could be patient too. 9
When the sky turned purple and pink, Maya gave Mateo a small flashlight with a red cloth over it. "Red light is gentle on turtle eyes," she said. "We keep our voices low and our feet still." Sam marked a roped area with little wooden signs. "This is the nesting zone," he explained. "Let us guard it well, my friend." 10
Mateo sat in the soft sand and waited. The waves rolled in and out, slow and steady. He felt sleepy, but he stayed quiet and watched. Sam sat nearby, calm as a stone. "Good things come to those who wait," Sam murmured. Mateo pulled his red bucket hat lower and kept his eyes on the dark water. 11
Then something moved in the shallows. A large green-brown shell rose from the waves, dotted with pale spots. Broad front flippers pushed the sea turtle slowly up the sand. "There she is," Maya breathed softly. Mateo held his breath. Sand clung to her shell, and her dark eyes looked gentle and wise. 12
The turtle dug and dug with her back flippers, slow and sure. Mateo watched her patience and felt his own patience grow. "She is laying her eggs now," Sam whispered. Mateo did not move. He did not speak. He simply cared, as still as the moonlight. When she finished, she swept sand over the nest to hide it well. 13
At last, the sea turtle turned and crawled back toward the water. Her broad flippers left long lines in the sand like a map. Mateo watched until she slipped under a wave and disappeared. "You helped keep her safe," Maya said. Sam smiled his warm, wrinkly smile. Mateo felt proud and full and sleepy all at once. 14
In the morning, Mateo helped the volunteers put up small signs that said, "Quiet please, turtles nesting." Visitors read them and spoke softly. Everyone smiled at the clean, bright sand. "You taught us to care," said the father from the day before. Mateo nodded, happy to know his help would stay on this beach. 15
Walking home, Mateo passed the quiet nest under the sand. "Sleep well, little eggs," he whispered. Sam waved from the dunes, and Maya called, "See you next summer, turtle helper!" Mateo grinned his gap-toothed grin under his red hat. He knew that caring for the sea took patience, quiet, and a gentle heart. The sea sang softly back.
