A Passage from the Tale

The Flamingo's First Painting Çınar BİBER

At the edge of the sparkling lagoon, where the water danced with sunlight, lived Felicity the flamingo. She had soft coralpink feathers and bright amber eyes with gentle lashes. Every morning, she stretched her long neck and waded in the shallows, looking for tiny shrimp to eat. But lately, Felicity had found something even more interesting than breakfast. 1

One day, while wading near the reeds, Felicity noticed a smooth, flat stone. It was the perfect shape for a canvas. She picked it up with her black-tipped beak and carried it home. That evening, she mixed crushed berries and bright green leaves to make colors. With a thin twig, she began to paint. Her first picture was a swirl of pink and orange—just like the sunset over the lagoon. 2

Felicity loved painting more than anything. She painted the dancing fish, the wiggly worms, and the tall grass swaying in the breeze. Her small sky-blue smock was always splattered with color, and her tiny red beret sat tilted on her head. She kept her paintings hidden under a bush, because she felt shy about her unusual pictures. They were not neat or proper— they were wild and bright. 3

One afternoon, Pip the spoonbill came by for a visit. Pip was a cheerful friend with white and pale grey feathers and a long, flat bill. He always carried a small yellow satchel and wore a green leaf behind one ear. 'Felicity, what are you hiding?' he asked, tilting his head. Felicity blushed and showed him her secret paintings. 4

Pip's warm brown eyes grew wide with wonder. 'These are amazing!' he said. 'You must show them at the lagoon festival!' Felicity shook her head, her coral-pink feathers ruffling. 'Oh no, I can't. People might laugh. My paintings are too strange.' Pip smiled kindly. 'Trying something new takes courage. But I'll be right beside you.' 5

The lagoon festival was only a week away. All the animals were busy preparing. The otters practiced juggling shells, the frogs tuned their croaky songs, and the dragonflies rehearsed their dances. Felicity watched from a distance, her heart fluttering like a nervous butterfly. She wanted to join in, but fear held her back. Pip noticed and gave her wing a gentle squeeze. 6

Every day, Pip visited Felicity's nest. 'Let's practice showing your paintings,' he said. They set up a little display on a smooth log. Felicity's paintings leaned against the wood—a burst of color. Pip pretended to be a visitor. 'Oh, how lovely!' he exclaimed. Felicity giggled, but her black-tipped beak still trembled. 'What if no one likes them?' she whispered. 7

Pip thought for a moment. 'Art is like a lagoon—full of surprises. Some fish are bright, some are shy. But all are beautiful.' Felicity looked at her paintings. Each one held a piece of her heart. Maybe Pip was right. Maybe her unusual pictures were special. She took a deep breath and decided to be brave. 'Okay,' she said. 'I'll do it.' 8

The night before the festival, Felicity couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned in her nest, her long thin legs tangled in the soft grass. What if the other animals pointed and stared? What if Mayor Heron said her paintings were too messy? She looked at her little red beret and remembered Pip's words: 'Trying something new takes courage.' 9

On the morning of the festival, the lagoon was buzzing with excitement. Streamers of seaweed hung from the trees, and lanterns made of shells glowed softly. Mayor Heron, a tall grey heron with a purple festival sash and round spectacles, welcomed everyone. 'Welcome to our annual lagoon festival!' he announced. 'Let us celebrate the talents of our community!' 10

Felicity stood behind her display, her heart pounding. She had set up her paintings on a big flat rock near the water. Each one was a swirl of color—pink, orange, green, and blue. Pip stood beside her, holding her wing. 'You can do this,' he whispered. Felicity took a deep breath and stepped forward. Her coralpink feathers shimmered in the sunlight. 11

At first, the other animals just walked by. Felicity's heart sank. Then a little frog hopped over. 'Wow! Look at these colors!' she croaked. Soon, more animals gathered. The otters loved the painting of dancing fish. The dragonflies admired the swirling sky. Felicity's amber eyes sparkled with hope. People did like her art! 12

Mayor Heron approached the display. He adjusted his round spectacles and studied each painting carefully. 'Did you make these?' he asked. Felicity nodded, her long neck trembling. Mayor Heron smiled warmly. 'They are wonderful—full of life and color! You have a true gift.' He turned to the crowd. 'Let's give Felicity a big cheer for her brave debut!' 13

Everyone clapped and cheered. Felicity felt a warm glow spread through her feathers. She had been so scared, but now she felt proud and happy. Pip hugged her with his wing. 'I knew you could do it!' he said. Felicity looked at her paintings and then at her friend. 'Thank you for believing in me,' she said softly. 14

From that day on, Felicity painted even more. She painted the lagoon at sunrise, the dancing dragonflies, and the smiling faces of her friends. Her paintings hung in nests all around the lagoon. And every time she felt shy, she remembered the festival and the courage she found. Trying something new had been scary, but it had also been wonderful.
