Mia is a quiet seven-year-old who loves soft moss, slow snails and the hush of early morning. When her family takes her to the animal shelter to choose a pet, most of the cats jump and meow for attention, but one fluffy grey tabby with a bent ear and wide amber-green eyes sits far back in his cage. The shelter lady explains that Pepper is shy and likes to hide. Mia asks to take him home anyway, promising that he can hide as much as he needs.
At home Pepper does exactly that, slipping under the sofa, behind the curtains and among the books, only his white paws or the tip of his ear showing. Instead of pulling him out, Mia sets up cozy hiding spots around the house, leaves food nearby and sits close by reading aloud and talking in a low, kind voice. Day by day the cat ventures a little further into the open, and Mia learns to hold still and let him come to her.
The story follows the slow building of trust between a patient child and a fearful animal, and it shows young readers that friendship with a shy creature cannot be rushed. It is a gentle read for children and for anyone who wants a calm story about kindness, patience and giving another being the time and safe place it needs.

A Passage from the Tale
The Girl and the Cat Çınar BİBER
Mia was seven years old, with warm light brown skin and curly dark brown hair that bounced when she walked. She wore a soft mustard yellow sweater and blue denim overalls, and a little green clip held back her curls. Mia loved quiet things: soft moss, slow snails, and the hush of early morning. One day, her family took her to the animal shelter to find a pet. 1
At the shelter, Mia saw many cats. Some jumped and meowed loudly, but one cat sat far back in his cage. He was a fluffy grey tabby with darker stripes, a white chest, and white paws. One ear was slightly bent, and his wide amber-green eyes watched Mia carefully. A red collar with a tiny brass tag hung loosely around his neck. 'That's Pepper,' said the shelter lady. 'He's shy and likes to hide.' 2
Mia knelt down and looked at Pepper. She didn't reach in or make big noises. 'Hello, Pepper,' she whispered. The cat blinked but stayed still. Mia turned to her mom. 'I want him,' she said. 'He can hide as much as he needs.' So Pepper came home in a soft carrier, and Mia carried him gently into the house, talking softly all the way. 3
At home, Mia set up a cozy corner with a blanket and a little box. But Pepper didn't come out. He found a hiding spot under the sofa and stayed there, only his white paws peeking out. Mia didn't pull him out. Instead, she sat nearby and read a book aloud. 'You can listen,' she said. 'I'll be right here.' The house was quiet, and Pepper's eyes glowed in the shadows. 4
The next day, Pepper found a new hiding place behind the curtains. Mia smiled and brought a soft cushion. She placed it near the window and sat beside it. 'This can be your spot,' she said. She talked about her day, about the clouds, and about a snail she saw. Pepper didn't move, but his bent ear twitched. Mia stayed patient and kept her voice low and kind. 5
Mia decided to make more hiding spots. She put a small blanket under the table, a cozy box in the closet, and a soft pillow on the bookshelf. Each spot was warm and safe. 'Pepper can choose,' she told her mom. She placed a bowl of food near each spot and sat quietly nearby, humming a little tune. Pepper watched from the shadows, curious but cautious. 6
On the third day, Mia sat by the bookshelf and read a story about a brave mouse. She didn't look at the hiding spot. Suddenly, she heard a tiny sound. Pepper's head peeked out from behind a book. His amber-green eyes were wide. Mia kept reading, her voice calm. Pepper watched her for a long time, then slowly pulled his head back. Mia's heart did a happy flip. 7
Mia started to talk to Pepper every day. She told him about her friends and her favorite color. She never tried to touch him. One afternoon, while she was drawing, Pepper's nose appeared from under the sofa. Then his bent ear. Then one white paw. He took a step out, then another. Mia held her breath. Pepper sat in the open, watching her. Then he dashed back to safety. 8
Mia didn't chase him. She just smiled and said, 'That was brave.' She kept drawing, and Pepper watched from his spot. Each day, he came out a little more. First, he sat at the edge of the sofa. Then he moved to the middle of the room. Mia stayed still and let him explore. She knew that trust takes time, and she had plenty of patience. 9
One evening, Pepper came closer than ever. Mia was sitting on the floor, and Pepper crept up to her foot. He sniffed her red sneaker, then her sock. Mia didn't move. Pepper's whiskers tickled her ankle. Then, very gently, he rubbed his cheek against her leg. Mia's eyes filled with happy tears. 'Hello, Pepper,' she whispered. The cat purred, a soft rumbly sound. 10
From that day, Pepper followed Mia everywhere. He followed her to the kitchen, to the garden, and up the stairs. He sat on the windowsill while she did her homework. He slept on her bed at night, curled up near her feet. Mia made sure he always had a hiding spot if he needed one, but Pepper didn't hide much anymore. He had found his best friend. 11
Mia learned that Pepper liked to chase a string and pounce on leaves. He also liked to sit in her lap while she read. His bent ear made him look extra cute, and his red collar jingled when he walked. Mia's mom said, 'You were so patient.' Mia nodded. 'He just needed time,' she said. 'And a safe place to hide until he was ready.' 12
Now Pepper greets Mia at the door every day. He meows loudly and winds around her legs. Mia picks him up and hugs him gently. They have a secret club: the Quiet Club. They sit together and listen to the birds. Pepper's amber-green eyes are bright and happy. Mia knows that patience and gentle trust made their friendship strong. 13
Mia and Pepper became the best of friends. They explored the garden together, Pepper's tail held high. They watched butterflies and listened to the wind. Mia always remembered how Pepper used to hide, and she felt proud of how far he had come. She learned that trust cannot be hurried, but with patience and love, it can grow into something wonderful.
