A Passage from the Tale
The Hedgehog's Honey Cake Çınar BİBER
In a cozy woodland burrow, a small hedgehog named Harry lived with his sky-blue apron and red-and-white checked oven mitts. His spiky brown quills with lighter tips bristled with excitement. Tomorrow was his best friend Bear's birthday! Harry wanted to bake a honey cake as a special surprise. He pulled out his wooden spoon and a big jar of honey. 'This will be the best cake ever,' he said, his round black eyes shining. 1
Harry mixed flour, eggs, and honey in a big bowl, humming a happy tune. His cream face got dusted with flour as he stirred. He poured the batter into a pan and put it in the oven. 'Bear will love this,' he thought. But soon, a smell of smoke filled the burrow. The cake had burned! Harry's tiny black nose twitched. 'Oh no!' he cried, looking at the black, smoky cake. 2
Harry didn't give up. He washed his bowl and tried again. This time, he watched the oven carefully, wearing his oven mitts. But when he took the cake out, it had fallen flat like a pancake. 'Why won't it work?' Harry sighed. His pink paws felt tired. He sat down and felt very sad. 'I just want to make Bear happy,' he whispered. A tear rolled down his floury cheek. 3
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Rabbit popped in, her long grey ears twitching. She carried a small woven basket full of flour. 'I heard you were baking,' she said with a bright smile. 'I brought extra flour!' Harry looked up, surprised. 'But my cake burned and then fell flat,' he said. Rabbit patted his paw. 'Don't worry, we'll fix it together,' she said kindly. 4
Soon, Bird flew in through the window, her blue and orange feathers bright. She carried a tiny red ribbon and a small berry in her beak. 'I brought berries for the cake!' she chirped. Harry's round black eyes widened. 'You both came to help?' he asked. Rabbit nodded. 'Of course! Bear's birthday is important to all of us.' Bird dropped the berry into Harry's paw. 'Let's bake!' she tweeted cheerfully. 5
Rabbit organized the ingredients. 'We need flour, honey, and berries,' she said, tying her yellow neckerchief tighter. Harry put on his oven mitts again, feeling hopeful. Bird perched on the edge of the bowl, ready to help. 'I can stir!' she said. Rabbit measured the flour carefully. Harry added the honey, and they all took turns mixing. The kitchen smelled sweet and warm. 'This is fun!' Harry laughed, flour on his cheeks. 6
They poured the batter into the pan and put it in the oven. 'Now we wait,' Rabbit said. Harry watched the oven clock, his tiny black nose twitching. Bird sang a happy song. But when they opened the oven, the cake was still flat! 'Oh no,' Harry sighed. 'Maybe I'm just not good at baking.' Rabbit put a paw on his shoulder. 'We just need to try something different,' she said. 7
Bird had an idea. 'Let's add more honey and berries on top!' she chirped. 'And maybe some nuts?' Rabbit suggested. Harry's eyes lit up. 'That sounds yummy!' He pulled out a jar of honey and drizzled it over the flat cake. Rabbit sprinkled berries, and Bird added tiny nuts. 'It's not flat anymore—it's a beautiful honey cake!' Harry said, his spiky quills quivering with joy. 8
They decorated the cake with swirls of honey and a ring of berries. Harry's sky-blue apron was covered in flour and honey, but he didn't mind. 'Bear will love this,' he said. Rabbit smiled. 'We all helped make it special.' Bird tied her red ribbon around the cake for decoration. 'It looks like a birthday cake now!' she tweeted. Harry felt warm inside. His friends had turned his mistake into something wonderful. 9
They carried the cake to Bear's cave. Bear was sitting outside, wearing his soft green scarf, his shaggy honey-brown fur shining in the sun. 'Happy birthday, Bear!' they all shouted. Bear's small warm brown eyes opened wide. 'A honey cake? For me?' he said, his big friendly smile spreading. Harry stepped forward. 'We made it together,' he said proudly. 'I hope you like it.' 10
Bear took a big bite. 'Mmm, this is the best cake I've ever tasted!' he said. 'The honey and berries are perfect.' Harry's heart swelled with happiness. 'It didn't start out perfect,' he admitted. 'It burned and then fell flat.' Bear chuckled. 'But you kept trying, and your friends helped. That's what makes it special.' He gave Harry a gentle hug. 'Thank you, my friend.' 11
Rabbit and Bird beamed. 'We couldn't have done it without each other,' Rabbit said. Bear nodded. 'Friendship means thinking about others, and you all thought of me.' He shared the cake with everyone. They sat together, eating and laughing. Harry looked at his friends and realized that sharing the work made everything sweeter. 'Happy birthday, Bear,' he said. 'I'm glad we could celebrate together.' 12
As the sun set, they all helped clean up. Rabbit packed her woven basket, and Bird flew to a nearby branch. 'That was the best birthday surprise,' Bear said. Harry smiled, his flourdusted face glowing. 'I learned that baking is more fun with friends,' he said. 'And that mistakes can turn into something wonderful.' Bear tied his green scarf around Harry's neck. 'You're a true friend,' he said.
