On a windy island in the wide blue sea, Poppy the puffin lives in a cozy burrow and spends her days exploring the paths near her home. One morning she finds a tiny red scarf outside her door, soft and warm, with a single loose thread trailing away across the grass. Curious about who left it, she tugs the thread and sets off to follow it, her orange feet pattering along the path.
Her walk soon becomes a shared adventure. Bramble the razorbill, carrying a woven seaweed satchel, joins her, and Pip the tern swoops overhead to spot more threads from the sky. Together the three friends follow a trail of colorful yarn — blue, pink, green, purple — past tide pools, grey rocks and an old cliff, until the path leads them to a small cave behind a waterfall. There they meet Elder Gwen, an elderly seabird in round spectacles who knits warm gifts from leftover yarn and leaves threads to guide anyone who might need a scarf or a hat.
The story follows the friends as they learn what the threads are for and decide how to help. It is a gentle tale about curiosity, teamwork and the quiet kindness of small gifts, and it suits young readers who enjoy animal adventures and simple mysteries. The book also offers a natural opening for talking with children about noticing others, sharing what we have and how even a little warmth can travel a long way.

A Passage from the Tale
The Puffin's Red Scarf Çınar BİBER
On a windy island in the wide blue sea, Poppy the puffin lived in a cozy burrow. She had black and white feathers, a bright orange beak, and round, curious eyes. One morning, she found something special right outside her door: a tiny red scarf, soft and warm, with one loose thread trailing away. "Who left this here?" Poppy wondered aloud. 1
Poppy wrapped the red scarf snugly around her neck. It felt warm and wonderful. She looked at the loose thread and gave it a gentle tug. The thread stretched across the grass and disappeared behind a rock. "A mystery!" she chirped. "I must follow this thread and find out who made this scarf." She started walking, her orange feet pattering on the path. 2
Soon Poppy met Bramble the razorbill, who carried a woven seaweed satchel. Bramble had a thick black beak and sleek, upright posture. "What have you found, Poppy?" asked Bramble. Poppy showed the red scarf and the trailing thread. "Let's follow it together," said Bramble. "Two sets of eyes are better than one." They followed the thread along the rocky shore. 3
The thread led them to a patch of bright yellow moss. There, a single blue thread was tangled in the grass. "Look!" said Poppy. "Another thread!" Just then, Pip the tern swooped down. Pip was small and slender, with a black cap and a forked tail. "I saw colorful threads from the sky!" Pip chirped. "They go all around the island!" 4
Pip had a blue thread tied around one leg like a bracelet. "I found this thread yesterday," Pip said. "It matches the one in the grass!" Poppy's eyes grew wide. "Someone must be leaving a trail," she said. "Let's follow the threads together!" Bramble nodded. "We'll solve this mystery as a team." They set off, with Pip flying above to spot more threads. 5
Pip flew high and called down, "There's a pink thread by the tide pools!" Poppy and Bramble hurried over. The pink thread was wrapped around a seashell. "Who would leave all these threads?" Poppy wondered. "Maybe someone who knits," said Bramble, adjusting the seaweed satchel. "My grandmother used to knit. She always had yarn everywhere." 6
They followed the pink thread to a cluster of grey rocks. There, a green thread fluttered in the breeze. "Green thread!" shouted Pip from above. "It leads toward the old cliff!" Poppy felt excited. "We're getting closer," she said. "I can feel it." Bramble smiled. "You're a good detective, Poppy." They walked on, the red scarf flapping gently around Poppy's neck. 7
At the old cliff, they found a purple thread tied to a tuft of grass. "Purple now!" said Pip, landing softly. "This is like a rainbow trail!" Poppy looked at all the threads they had found. "Someone is leaving a path for us to follow," she said. "But why?" Bramble thought for a moment. "Maybe they want us to find them." 8
The purple thread led to a small cave tucked behind a waterfall. "It's dark in there," said Pip, a little nervous. "I'll go first," said Poppy bravely. "The scarf will keep me warm." She stepped inside, and her friends followed close behind. The cave was cozy, with soft moss on the floor. And in the corner, they saw a warm, glowing light. 9
In the cave sat an elderly seabird named Elder Gwen. She wore round spectacles and a patchwork shawl made of knitted scraps. A basket of colorful yarn sat beside her, and knitting needles clicked in her lap. "Hello, little ones," she said gently. "I see you found my threads." Poppy stepped forward. "Did you make this red scarf?" she asked. 10
Elder Gwen nodded. "I knit warm gifts for all the island birds," she said. "But I'm old and slow, so I leave threads to guide anyone who might need a scarf or a hat." Poppy looked at the red scarf around her neck. "It's beautiful," she said. "Thank you." Bramble and Pip smiled. "You've been making gifts for everyone?" asked Pip. "That's so kind!" 11
Elder Gwen showed them a basket full of tiny knitted gifts: scarves, hats, and mittens in bright colors. "I make them from leftover yarn," she said. "Each one is small, but it carries my warmth." Poppy's heart felt full. "Your gifts are wonderful," she said. "They make everyone feel special." Bramble nodded. "We can help you deliver them!" 12
Poppy, Bramble, and Pip spent the afternoon helping Elder Gwen. They carried the tiny gifts to burrows and nests all around the island. Birds of every kind received warm scarves and hats. "Thank you!" they chirped. "How thoughtful!" Poppy saw smiles everywhere. She realized that Elder Gwen's small gifts were making a big difference. The island felt warmer already. 13
As the sun began to set, Elder Gwen gave Poppy a special gift: a tiny knitted hat to match her red scarf. "You followed the threads with kindness and curiosity," she said. "That is the best gift of all." Poppy hugged the hat. "I'll wear it every day," she promised. Bramble and Pip cheered. "Three cheers for Elder Gwen!" 14
Back at her burrow, Poppy snuggled into her cozy nest. The red scarf and the new hat kept her warm. She thought about Elder Gwen, who quietly made gifts for everyone. "Small gifts can carry big meaning," Poppy said softly. "They warm hearts, not just bodies." She smiled and closed her eyes, feeling grateful for her friends and the kind old seabird.
